Catamounts Drop Neutral Site Match to Cleveland State

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Western Carolina volleyball continued its season-opening action on Saturday afternoon, dropping a straight-set decision to Cleveland State in the squad's second match of the Carolina Classic inside historic Carmichael Arena on the campus of tournament host, the University of North Carolina.

Junior Ali Morris led the offensive attack with her second double-double of the young season, finishing with 10 kills and 14 digs to pace the Catamounts. Senior Bailey Hartsough recorded a team-high 17 digs on the defensive side of the court while adding eight kills and a pair of blocks. Sophomore Logan Carr also tallied eight kills along with a team-high four rejections for WCU.

Senior Sarah Janourova led the Catamounts again in the assist column on Saturday with 30 helpers and tallied six digs and a pair of kills. Eda Yalcinkaya added 15 digs on the defensive end for Western Carolina.

Nia Hall led the Vikings with 12 kills and Liberty Torres finished with 11 kills. Ella Mihacevich dished out a match-high 31 assists, totaling seven digs and four kills. Emma Walker totaled a match-high 22 digs for the Vikings as Laken Voss added 10 digs with seven kills.

The opening set saw three early ties before a 5-2 WCU run gave the Catamounts a 9-6 lead on Cleveland State. The Vikings responded, though, with a 10-4 spurt to take the three-point lead and force WCU to spend a timeout. The Catamounts and Vikings went back and forth before WCU three of four points to trim the deficit to one, 21-20. Western Carolina got it to within one on two occasions before a pair of late kills allowed the Vikings to steal the set 25-23.

Both teams went back-and-forth early in set two before an 11-4 run from Cleveland State pushed the deficit to seven, 15-8, and forced the Catamounts to use a pair of timeouts. Western Carolina responded in a big way with a 10-3 burst that evened the set at 18, with Cleveland State forced to use both of its timeouts during the WCU run. The Vikings finished on a 7-3 run to claim the second set by the score of 25-21.

The Vikings opened the third set in similar fashion to how the second set ended with a 6-1 burst to force a WCU timeout in the early going. The two sides went back-and-forth over several points before six of the next eight from the Vikings made it 17-8, forcing WCU's second timeout. After the stoppage, the Catamounts answered with five of the next six points before the Vikings closed the match out in straight sets, winning 25-16.

Western Carolina closes out its season-opening action from the Carolina Classic on Sunday against the host North Carolina with the first serve slated for 2 p.m. in Chapel Hill. The match will be shown on ACCN Extra (paid subscription required) with live stats on CatamountSports.com.
