Catamounts Block Eagles in Nonconference Sweep

Blue Tallies Career-High Eight Blocks in Win

Buies Creek, N.C. – Senior Sarah Janourova collected her team-high fifth double-double of the season to help lead Western Carolina in a straight-set victory over North Carolina Central in the first match of the Campbell Invitational at Pope Convocation Center.

Senior Bailey Hartsough led the offense for the Catamounts with 11 kills, and junior Ali Morris and sophomore Logan Carr both added eight kills to the offensive showing on Friday. Junior Janelle Blue and sophomore Zoe Zudans chipped in six kills apiece. Janourova finished off her fifth double-dip with 20 assists and 10 digs while sophomore Katie Boney added 16 helpers.

Sophomore Eda Yalcinkaya led the Catamounts with 16 digs, joining Janourova to round out the double-figure defensive performances for WCU. Blue led a monster block performance at the net, registering a career-high eight blocks with junior Samantha Jo Mikosky adding five rejections, and Carr contributing three stops.

Karolina Zubkova and Kamren Harper led the Eagles on the offensive end with five kills apiece. Bella Dearinger had a team-high 15 assists and also added five digs. Loren Johnson paced the Eagles on the defensive end with 14 digs.

Western Carolina (2-6) came out of the gates fast in its tournament opener as the Catamounts scored the first five points of the match to gain the early edge and force an Eagles timeout. NCCU responded by cutting the deficit to 8-3 out of the timeout before a 7-2 spurt from the Catamounts stretched the lead out to double digits at 10, 15-5. The Eagles whittled the deficit to eight, 20-12, before WCU scored five of the final eight points to win the set 25-15.

Set number two saw four early ties before five of the following points scored by the Catamounts made it an 8-5 lead early. NCCU managed to cut the deficit to one, 9-8, before a 5-1 spurt allowed the Purple & Gold to stretch the lead to 14-9 and force an Eagles timeout. NCCU continued to battle out of the stoppage, though, with five of the next eight points to cut it to a 17-14 margin before an 8-2 burst down the stretch gave WCU a 25-16 set-two win.

The Catamounts opened the third set similarly to the first set with a 5-0 burst to force an early Eagles timeout. NCCU (0-6) answered with a 10-5 run, including six straight points to tie the set at 10 and force a WCU timeout. Karen Glover's squad responded with a 7-3 spurt to force the Eagles to take a timeout. NCCU did cut the deficit to three, 19-16, before a 6-2 WCU burst allowed the Catamounts to take the set 25-18 and the match in three sets.

WCU continues tournament action on Saturday with a doubleheader against American (10:30 a.m.) and event host Campbell (6 p.m.), both of which will take place at the Pope Convocation Center. The matchup against host Campbell will be shown on FloSports (paid subscription required), and live stats will be available on CatamountSports.com for both matches.
