Carr Leads Volleyball in Nonconference Finale Sweep

Statesboro, Ga. – Led by sophomore Logan Carr who totaled 10 kills and a .714 hitting percentage, Western Carolina volleyball closed out nonconference play with a straight-set win over Alabama State in the tournament finale from the Bash in the Boro on Saturday morning at Hanner Fieldhouse.

Carr led the way with 10 kills and added five blocks as senior Bailey Hartsough added nine kills, six digs, and a career-high five service aces to help pace the offense. Junior Ali Morris finished with a team-high nine digs along with five kills for WCU. Senior Sarah Janourova and sophomore Katie Boney paced the offense with 31 combined assists as the Catamount pairing posted 17 and 14 assists respectively. Junior Janelle Blue had a match-high five blocks as classmate Samantha Jo Mikosky added four rejections.

WCU as a team finished the weekend with a .250 hitting percentage including a .426 total in Friday morning's match and a .333 performance in Saturday's morning's action.

Freshman Courtney Graham made her first collegiate appearance in Saturday morning's action.

Following the conclusion of the tournament, junior outside hitter Ali Morris and sophomore middle blocker Logan Carr were named to the Bash in the Boro All-Tournament team. Carr finished with 23 kills and a .556 hitting percentage along with 10 blocks as Morris totaled 22 kills and 23 digs for the Catamounts over the three matches. 

A'Nylah Cobb led the Hornets with nine kills as Kaylen Hines added seven kills for Alabama State's offensive attack. Kamrynn Clay added a team-best 17 assists as Sierra Scanlan added 10 helpers. Taylor Williams led the way on the defensive end with 10 digs as Hines had a team-high three blocks.

After a pair of early ties in the first set on Saturday, WCU used a 6-1 burst to jump out to an early 8-3 lead forcing a Hornets timeout. Alabama State quickly cut it to a four-point deficit before a 12-5 run from the Catamounts stretched it to a 21-10 lead forcing a second Hornets timeout. The two teams traded points down the stretch before WCU held on for the 25-13 set win. WCU used a hot-hitting first set going .406 led by Carr hitting .875 on eight swings with seven kills as the Catamounts had just one attack error.

WCU kept its foot on the gas in the second set, racing to an early 7-3 lead forcing the Hornets to call an early timeout in the set. ASU continued to chip away, cutting the deficit to three on multiple occasions before a  5-1 spurt allowed the Catamounts to make it 16-9 and force a Hornets timeout. The Catamounts kept the offense going down the stretch with a 9-3 run to claim a 25-12 second set and take a 2-0 lead. WCU hit .353 in the set with seven kills on 17 swings with one error to continue its strong offense.

The third set saw five ties in the opening ten points before WCU used an 11-5 run to stretch its lead to six, 16-10 halfway through the third set. After the Hornets answered with three straight, the Catamounts responded with a three-point run of their own to push the score to 19-13 forcing a Hornet timeout. Alabama State cut the deficit to five, 21-15 before the Catamounts closed out the match with a 4-1 spurt and a set three final of 25-16 for their second straight-set win of the weekend.

The Catamounts open conference play on Wednesday, Sept. 25, at 6 p.m. against The Citadel in Charleston. WCU follows up the Wednesday night tilt with its 2024 home opener on Friday, Sept. 27, at 12:30 p.m. against Mercer. Both matchups will be shown on ESPN+ (paid subscription required), and live stats will be available on CatamountSports.com.
