Volleyball Drops Tournament Finale to Host ECU

GREENVILLE, N.C. – Western Carolina volleyball closed its second weekend of tournament action, falling in straight sets to host East Carolina in the final match of the Pirate Invitational on Saturday afternoon inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum.
 
Following the conclusion of the tournament, senior outside hitter Bailey Hartsough was named to the Pirate Invitational All-Tournament team. The LaGrange, Ind. native finished with 39 kills, a team-high 54 digs, nine assists, five blocks, and three service aces for WCU.
 
Hartsough also eclipsed the 900-kill mark for her career, currently with 905 kills to rank in 20th place in program history.
 
Senior Sarah Janourova claimed her third double-double of the weekend and fourth of the season on Saturday as the Prague, Czech Republic native had 16 assists and 10 digs while also adding two kills and a pair of blocks. Junior Ali Morris and Hartsough led the offensive attack with seven kills apiece as Morris added ten digs for her fifth match of the young season, eclipsing double-digit digs.
 
Sophomore Eda Yalçinkaya added a team-high 11 digs for the Catamounts. Sophomore Logan Carr and junior Samantha Jo Mikosky led the WCU block as Carr had a match-high five rejections and Mikosky added four stops.
 
ECU was led offensively by Fran McBride, who had a match-high of 13 kills. McBride also finished with four blocks. Angeles Alderete and Ellie Pate posted nine kills apiece for the Pirates as Pate added 13 digs to her stat line. Payton Evenstad finished with 21 assists and tallied nine digs and a pair of aces. Lara Uyar totaled a match-high 17 digs, along with seven helpers.
 
A tight opening set on Saturday saw six ties in the early going before the Catamounts jumped out to the 10-8 lead over ECU. The hosts raced to the media timeout on a 7-2 spurt that allowed the Pirates to take a 15-12 lead at the timeout. The Catamounts answered out of the timeout with four of the following six points before East Carolina scored five of the next eight to take a 22-18 lead forcing a WCU timeout. The Pirates closed the set by stretching the margin to five, 25-20, and taking the early lead.
 
The two squads mirrored the first set in the early going of set two with six ties as the last came at eight all before 13 of the next 14 points to seize control of the set and take a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-13 victory in the middle set.
 
East Carolina (6-0) opened the third set quickly with four of the opening five points to seize early control of the set. The teams traded points that allowed WCU to keep the deficit at three before a 7-2 run to the media timeout allowed the Pirates to take a 15-7 lead. The Catamounts battled back with a 5-2 spurt to cut the deficit to 17-12 before ECU scored four unanswered to push the lead to nine, 21-12. The Catamounts continued to claw, fighting back to a 22-16 deficit, but the hosts closed with three straight points to claim the set 25-16 and the match in three sets.
 
The Catamounts (1-5) continue their lengthy season-opening road swing, traveling I-26 for a nonconference showdown with mountain rival UNC Asheville on Tuesday, Sept. 10 from the Justice Center. The matchup with the Bulldogs will be shown on ESPN+ (paid subscription required), and live stats will be available on CatamountSports.com.
