Cullowhee, N.C. -- The Western Carolina women's tennis team isn't quite done for the fall as they're slated to take on the Wofford Terrier Invite. Play for the weekend tournament is scheduled to begin Friday, Nov. 7, at 11:00 a.m. and run through Sunday, Nov. 9, with play beginning at 8:30 a.m.
WCU will share the courts in Spartanburg, S.C. with nine other teams, as Furman, Gardner-Webb, Clemson, Kennesaw State, Liberty, Mercer, Presbyterian, UNC Asheville, and the host-team Terriers, are all expected to compete. Â
At the moment, only two Catamounts will compete in this weekend's action, with freshman
Axelle Van Beurden and sophomore
Hokualohi Lui making the trip. The duo is scheduled to compete in both doubles and singles play. Â
Van Beurden and Lui will open Friday, battling Liberty's Celina Joseph and Anika Lemus on the doubles courts at 11:00 a.m. The two will then split, with Van Beurden taking on Furman's Lily Doherty at 1:30 p.m. and Lui contesting Kennesaw State's Che Nel in singles play at 3:00 p.m.
The two Catamounts won their most recent singles matches, earning straight-set solo wins at the ITA Carolina Regionals. Lui claimed a 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) win, fending off a late rally by Elon's Nathalie Marinovitch while Van Beurden claimed a hard-fought victory  7-6 (8-6), 6-4 over Elon's Mairana Reding.
