Cullowhee, N.C. – Three track and field Catamounts are back in action on Sunday afternoon as
Ethan Long,
CJ McFerrin, and
Jackson Livingston each compete in the Dani Palooza Last Chance Meet, hosted by High Point University. All three Catamounts are jockeying for an NCAA East Regional berth in Jacksonville, Fla., scheduled for May 28-31.
The SoCon's Co-Freshman of the Year,
Ethan Long, is expected to compete in the 200m at the last chance meet. The best time this season in the event for the Lakeside, Ky., product is a 20.83s mark set at the Catamount Classic in April. Last season's qualifying times in the event ranged from 19.75s to 20.70s, while the cut-off this year is currently a five-way tie at 47th with a 20.77s finish.
The 200m is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. with the men's portion of the event following the women's race.
CJ McFerrin will see action in a loaded 110m hurdles field, as the Catamount senior looks to push for the program record in the event and a regional appearance. McFerrin has come close to breaking the school record with a 13.98s finish at the VertKlasse meet – also held in High Point – and a 14.00s flat at the Catamount Classic, though both times were wind-aided finishes.
Last year's East Regional qualifying times ranged from 13.18s to 13.96s. This year, the 50th-best time in the region is a 13.95s finish by Jackson State's Ivan Donaldson, though the top time is .03s slower than last season's. The hurdle events are scheduled to begin at 3:15 p.m.
Nearly a regional qualifier last season,
Jackson Livingston competes in the men's javelin throw on Sunday at approximately 2:30 p.m. The junior out of Prosperity, S.C. has a top mark of 60.13m this year, which he hurled at the Davidson Relays. His top mark is 62.30m, set at the SoCon Championships last season. The javelin distances this season range from 82.35m to 62.36m, a little more than a full meter shorter than the cutoff distance of 63.69m last year.
Should any of the three Catamounts qualify for the NCAA Regionals, they will be back in action in Jacksonville, Fla. with North Florida hosting the postseason meet from May 28-31.
