Cullowhee, N.C. -- For the first time since 2018, the Western Carolina track and field team collected three SoCon weekly honors as
Shaneil Lysight,
Trevor Williams, and
Austin Cline were named the SoCon Women's Track, Men's Track, and Men's Field athletes of the week for their performances at the USA Invite. Chace Washington-Saunders (Men's Track), Mateius Brown (Men's Field), and Makaila McIntyre (Women's Field) were the three honorees in 2018 when the Catamounts last claimed three SoCon weekly honors in one week.
The award is the second weekly honor for Lysight and the first for Cline and Williams. \
Shaneil Lysight's athlete of the week honor comes after a strong performance in Mobile, Ala., where the senior Catamount climbed the all-time performance list in the 100m hurdles. Her event-winning time of 13.79s trimmed .09 seconds off her own personal record in the event, placing her second in the WCU record books. Additionally, the St. Andrew, Jamaica product set a pr in the 100m with a 12.53s finish.
Trevor Williams earned his first career weekly honor after taking first place in the 800m. The sophomore Catamount took the win thanks to a 1:55.68 performance, just edging out second-place Jeb Scarbrough's 1:56.47.
Austin Cline took a pair of top-five finishes in Mobile, including an event win in the Shot Put. Cline led the event from the first throw of the day, notching his event-winning toss on his fourth attempt. He also set a personal record in the hammer throw, taking fourth in the event with a 54.50m mark. Â
Lysight, Williams, and Cline will be back in action this week as the Catamounts represent the Southern Conference for the Big South vs SoCon Conference Challenge in Asheville, N.C., which runs from Mar. 20-21. The Catamounts will be joined by VMI and Wofford as the SoCon's representatives and will face off with the UNC Asheville Bulldogs, Radford, Winthrop, and Gardner-Webb of the Big South. Â
