Asheville, N.C. -- The Western Carolina track and field teams posted a pair of team wins at the Big South vs SoCon Conference Challenge, with the women's team cruising to 239 points and the men's team posting 208 in scored competition. Individually, the Catamounts claimed 13 event wins and 56 top-five finishes across both days of competition.
Reigning SoCon athletes of the week
Shaneil Lysight,
Trevor Williams, and
Austin Cline all recorded an event win on day two of the meet. Lysight and Cline both posted back-to-back event wins in the 100m hurdles (13.98s) and the shot put (15.61m), respectively, while Williams took the win in the 400m (48.52s).
The WCU men's throws team put up an impressive performance in the shot put behind Cline, taking first through fourth in the event. Cline's 15.61m toss was followed by
Anthony Hawkins Jr.'s 15.57m attempt, with
Kolton Weaver (14.98m) and
Jacob Thomas (14.44m) filling out the order. Â
Hawkins also claimed his first collegiate event win as the freshman took the Discus with a 46.35m attempt. He was followed by Trez Fouch, who took second with a 45.51m throw.
Daniel Coronell and
Sadler Miller took first in their respective high jumps. Coronell claimed first via tiebreaker over fellow Catamount freshman
Josh Flack as the duo both cleared 1.99m, though Coronell did so on fewer attempts. Miller's event win came on a 1.68m clear, which she secured on her second attempt at the height. Â
Peyton Skoglund rounded out WCU's first-place finishes on the track, taking the event win in the 1500m with a 4:42.26 finish.
Katherine Hopkins and
Ashlyn Watkins were close behind, taking third and fourth with a 4:46.03 and a 4:49.47 finish, respectively. Â
Up Next for The Catamounts:
WCU is next scheduled to compete at the High Point-hosted VertKlasse Meeting on April 2-3. They'll then head to Durham, N.C., for the Duke Invitational on April 9-11 before returning home to host the annual Catamount Classic on April 24-25. Â
