Cullowhee, N.C. – Second in the Southern Conference standings through Saturday's conclusion of the 2026 regular season, Western Carolina baseball enters the postseason as the No. 2 seed in this week's
SoCon Baseball Championship, presented by Holston Gases at Fluor Field at the West End in Greenville, S.C.
WCU makes its tournament debut on Thursday, May 21, in game six of the postseason classic, scheduled for the 12:30 p.m. game. The Catamounts have two byes, avoiding the two single-elimination games scheduled for Wednesday, followed by the first two games in the double-elimination portion of the tournament on Wednesday evening.
WCU must wait until Wednesday night to learn its first-round opponent, as No. 6 ETSU and No. 7 UNCG meet in Game 2 at 12:30 p.m. for the right to advance out of the single-elimination portion to face third-seeded Samford at 7:30 p.m., with that winner advancing to face WCU.
Western Carolina's Catamount Club will host
a special pregame Catamount Central event (
click the event to register) just outside the stadium at
Mac's Speed Shop (
930 S. Main Street, Greenville, S.C. 29601). Each pregame event is scheduled 90 minutes before every game the Catamounts play in the tournament (
excluding any games at 9 a.m.), with the first social scheduled for 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 21.
The Catamounts have been one of the top two seeds 15 times since 1989. Most recently, WCU was the No. 1 seed after winning the 2013 and 2014 regular-season championships and the No. 2 seed in both 2016 and 2017, winning the conference crown by downing top-seeded Samford twice in '16.
Each game of the 2026 SoCon Baseball Championship, presented by Holston Gases, will be broadcast on the Catamount Sports Network with free, live streaming audio available and live stats available through links online at CatamountSports.com. Every game will also be broadcast on ESPN+ (
paid subscription required), with Saturday night's championship game slated to air on ESPNU (
check local listings).
About the Southern Conference:
The Southern Conference enters the postseason ranked as the sixth-best NCAA conference nationally, boasting five teams inside the national Top 100, including Mercer (26), Western Carolina (56), The Citadel 61, Samford (89), and ETSU (93). The SoCon looks to place multiple teams in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2012.
Wofford ranks just outside the Top 100 at 108, with additional WCU opponents Winthrop (102), Appalachian State (104), and Morehead State (105), also just outside the century mark. Other notable opponents for the Catamounts this season include Georgia (14), Wake Forest (18), East Carolina (45), Troy (46), Charlotte (90), and USC Upstate (91).
The Catamounts scored two Quad 1 wins, with 10 victories in Quad 2. Among those opponents listed above inside the top 108, WCU had 18 combined victories.
About the 2026 SoCon Baseball Championship:
Riding an eight-game winning streak, Mercer (43-13, 15-6 SoCon) won its first SoCon regular-season championship since 2017 after closing the year by sweeping VMI and ETSU in league play, and scored an upset of nationally-ranked Georgia Tech.
WCU earned the No. 2 seed, while Samford (28-24, 12-9 SoCon) claimed the No. 3 seed based on its series win this weekend over Wofford (34-20, 12-9 SoCon). The Citadel (30-24, 11-10 SoCon) is the No. 5 seed after sweeping VMI, followed closely by ETSU (30-22, 10-11 SoCon) in the No. 6 slot. UNC Greensboro (22-31, 7-14 SoCon), and VMI (28-26, 3-18 SoCon) round out the field.
With the bracket set, fifth-seeded The Citadel and No. 8 VMI will open the championship schedule on Wednesday at 9 a.m. (ESPN+) in a rivalry rematch of the final regular-season series. No. 6 ETSU and No. 7 UNC Greensboro play the second game at 12:30 PM (ESPN+), with the winner of The Citadel-VMI to battle No. 4 Wofford at 4 pm (ESPN+) and the winner of ETSU-UNCG facing No. 3 Samford at 7:30 p.m. (ESPN+) in a busy day at the ballpark.
WCU and Mercer await the two teams to advance in Wednesday's winner's bracket games.
