Catamount Football ‘26: Position Preview – Wide Receivers

Position group on the receiving end of WCU’s high-octane offense

Cullowhee, N.C. – In Western Carolina's high-powered offense, the wide receivers are often the stars of the show.

For the past several seasons, the Catamount receiving corps has been on the receiving end of the program's offensive success, producing explosive plays and eye-popping numbers in Kerwin Bell's attack. Despite the departure of several key contributors, expectations remain high for a talented and youthful group poised to keep Western Carolina's passing game among the league's most dangerous in 2026.

The Catamounts must replace four of their top six receivers from a season ago, including leading targets James Tyre and Malik Knight. Tyre paced the team in 2025 with 68 receptions for 832 yards and 11 touchdowns, tying for the third-most receiving scores in a single season in program history. Knight added 47 catches for 774 yards and seven touchdowns.

With new opportunities available, the search is on for the next breakout performer.

Leading that effort is new wide receivers coach Corey Headley, who moved from coaching quarterbacks to guiding the receiver room this spring. Headley brings the same energetic approach that helped the Catamount quarterbacks engineer a record-setting campaign a year ago.

"Playing wide receiver in Coach (Rylan) Wells' system is one of the most demanding positions. You must be able to not only run, but to think on the run. You don't lead the country in passing by being vanilla," Headley said. "Taking over the room in the spring was a great experience for all of us."

Headley's philosophy centers on mastering complexity through preparation. Drawing inspiration from author Dub Maddox's belief that "simplicity is a battle cry to shield from the work required to master the chaos," he emphasizes the details that make the offense go.

Or, as Leonardo da Vinci famously said, "Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication."

The objective, according to Headley, is straightforward. "Like everyone else, we are just getting the good players the ball in space."

Western Carolina enters the season with 18 receivers on the roster, including 11 returners, six freshmen, and one transfer. Nine of the returning players have appeared in games, while five have recorded receptions in their collegiate careers.

At the forefront are fifth-year veteran AJ Colombo and sophomore Michael Rossin, who earned Freshman All-America honors following an impressive debut season.

A preseason second-team All-Southern Conference selection, Colombo has established himself as one of the league's most dependable pass catchers. He enters 2026 with 97 career receptions, more than 1,000 receiving yards, and 10 touchdowns. His 61 catches in 2024 led the Southern Conference.

Rossin emerged as one of the offense's most exciting young playmakers last season. The sophomore appeared in nine games as a true freshman, totaling 22 receptions for 462 yards while recording at least two catches in eight contests. His six touchdown receptions ranked third on the team and tied for the second-most by a Catamount freshman in program history.

"AJ has relentless effort, is a fearsome leader, and embodies everything you want in a football player," Headley said. "We're all excited to see him come back after his injury and lead the team this fall. Rossin, or MJ, is extremely talented, a hard worker, and is determined to always be the best version of himself on the field."

Another player expected to make an impact is Jai Boyd, whose development was slowed by injury a season ago. One of the fastest players in the room, Boyd possesses the ability to stretch defenses vertically and create explosive plays down the field.

He is joined by veteran Marcus Striggles, who highlighted last season with an acrobatic touchdown catch at Campbell, and Trey Walker, who scored on his first collegiate touch.

"Jai is one of the more experienced guys in the room and brings good knowledge to his teammates. He is a great route runner and has big play ability for our offense," Headley said. "Striggles has a great attitude both on and off the field. He continues to only get better and is a great complement to AJ. Trey should be one of the fastest guys on the field in every game. He flashed early as a freshman, and we're expecting more of that this year."
The depth of the position extends beyond the top names.

Austin Cunningham returns after appearing in 12 games last season and leads a group of second-year players that includes Kha'leal Sterling, Richard Hollis, and Jemarious Reaves, all of whom gained valuable experience in 2025. Junior Matthew Keener, whom Headley describes as a "jack of all trades," and sophomore Ellis Chappell continue to push for larger roles.

The coaching staff is equally excited about a talented influx of newcomers.

Transfer Kale Woodburn arrives in Cullowhee from Cincinnati after originally earning three-star prospect status out of high school. He sat out the 2024 season before appearing in two games for the Bearcats last year.

Joining him is a six-player freshman class featuring three-star recruit Santana Carlos (Hollywood, Fla.), Michael Davis Jr. (Leesville, La.), three-star prospect Mouhamadou Mane (Kathleen, Ga.), Corey Swint (Miami, Fla.), Emanuel Palmer (Collierville, Tenn.), and Davon Washington (Altamonte Springs, Fla.).

As the season approaches, Headley believes the group's identity extends beyond statistics and production.

"Our mantra is Isaiah 6:8, 'Here am I. Send me,'" Headley said. "You have to be the guy willing to go out and do whatever it takes to help this team, your family, and the community. Overall, I am lucky to coach some incredible kids, and they deserve all the credit."

With proven veterans, emerging young talent, and a fresh wave of newcomers, the Catamount receivers once again appear positioned to play a leading role in keeping Western Carolina's offense among the most explosive in the Southern Conference.

Western Carolina opens the 2026 campaign on Saturday, Aug. 29, hosting Eastern Kentucky at E.J. Whitmire Stadium / Bob Waters Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. as the Catamounts debut their new Night Cat black Nike uniforms and invite fans to help Blackout Whitmire by wearing black.

The first 3,500 fans in attendance will receive a free black WCU T-shirt, while 4,000 Blackout thunder sticks, courtesy of The Everson, will also be distributed. Prior to kickoff, the 15th Annual Freshmen Run returns as members of WCU's Class of 2030 lead the Catamounts onto the field.

The home opener will conclude with a special drone light show presented by Catamount Athletics and Vannoy Construction and produced by Sky Elements.

The game is presented by Ingles and media partners Kiss Country and Star 104.3.

Season tickets, single-game tickets, and gameday parking for all six home games are available through the Catamount Athletics Ticket Office, by calling (828) 227-2401, or online at CatamountSports.com.
