The 2008 Bennett Hofford Family of Hotels Southern Conference Baseball Championships are scheduled for May 20-25 at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park in Charleston, S.C. For the 19th consecutive season, The Citadel will serve as host for event.
The City of Charleston and The Citadel have hosted the tournament since 1990. In 2009 the championship will move to Greenville, S.C., for one season before returning to Charleston for 2010.
The tournament's winner secures the league's automatic bid to the NCAA postseason.
Western Carolina leads all SoCon schools in terms of total conference championships with 20, including 11 regular season crowns and nine tournament titles. The Citadel is second with seven tournament championships. Seven SoCon teams have won the conference tournament all-time, with Wofford garnering its first-ever league tourney crown last season.
The 2008 tournament will be at Riley Park for the 12th consecutive year. All 10 league teams that play baseball in the Southern Conference qualify for the tournament which features a modified double-elimination format. A new format has been unveiled for the 2008 tournament with the creation of two brackets. Each bracket winner will meet in a one-game championship game on Sunday, May 25. The championship game will be televised live on SportSouth.
