Gavin Mortenson joined the Catamount baseball coaching staff as a graduate assistant coach following his graduation from Western Carolina University in 2024. In his role, he works primarily with the pitching staff, including in-game work in the bullpen with Catamount relievers.

A right-handed pitcher originally from Summerfield, N.C., Mortenson made 67 career appearances on the mound as a Catamount, among the Top 25 in the WCU record book, making 40 starts to rank tied for 13th in the program’s ledgers, tossing 218 career innings. Mortenson recorded 11 career victories, adding three saves, each coming in 2023. He finished his WCU career ranked 22nd in program history with 191 strikeouts, including a team-best 63 punchouts as a senior in 2024.

During the summers of 2025 and 2026, Mortenson served as an assistant coach for the Hendersonville Honeycrisps of the Old North State League. He also has experience working with the NC Baseball Academy as an instructor and camp counselor.

Mortenson earned his bachelor’s degree in sport management in 2024 and his master’s in sport management from WCU in May 2026, also receiving a graduate certificate in project management.
