Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina women's volleyball team battled with Southern Conference opponent Furman, Monday night at the Ramsey Center in a five game match.
After dropping the first two games, WCU fought back to defeat the Lady Paladins 15-8 in game three and 15-12 in game four to send the match into rally scoring. The Lady Cats recorded 20 and 21 kills as a team in games three and four respectively to overcome the Lady Paladins.
In a close game five (15-13) Furman took advantage of rally scoring to end the match on a kill by junior setter Laura Hooks that would have been a sideout.
Junior Christy Attebery led Western with 27 kills. She was followed by freshmen Pamela Stein, Crissi Harrison and Sara Komosinski's performances of 14, 13 and 11 kills respectively. Sophomore Cindy Camp recorded a season-high 20 digs to lead the team with several others marking double-figures in that category.
As a team WCU set a season-high 102 digs in the contest to Furman's 95. The Lady Cats recorded 72 kills, 18 block assists and one block solo.
Western falls to a 5-10 record overall and 3-3 in league play while Furman advances to 7-11, and 6-1. WCU will next host College of Charleston Saturday, October 7 at 2:00 p.m. in Reid Gymnasium.
