Las Vegas, Nev. - The Western Carolina Catamount volleyball team fell 3-0 to the No. 2 nationally ranked Long Beach State, Friday afternoon.
WCU fell 30-17, 30-15 and 30-21 to Long Beach State, who kept their starters in for all three games. The Cats accomplished one of their goals to score over 20 points against the nationally ranked team.
Senior Christy Attebery led the team in kills with eight while freshman Stefanie Peters led in digs with nine.
The Cats later played American University in the UNLV Tournament, falling 3-0. WCU battled the entire match, however, was unable to steal a game from American falling 30-27, 30-24, 30-24.
Attebery again led the team in kills recording a double-double with 10 kills and 20 digs. The Cats put up 15 blocks to the Eagles nine, however, the Eagles marked 51 kills to Western's 39.
Also recording double figures in the match for Western is Peters with 11 digs, senior Bri Milan-Williams with 30 assists and sophomore Sara Komosinski with 10 digs.
"Long Beach State brought out the very best in us," said Head Coach Michelle Hansen. "We outblocked them 2-1 in game one and fought tooth and nail every point. It was a very fun and exciting match to watch. I have never seen a Western Carolina team play so hot in the past four years. I was very proud of our effort."
WCU falls to a 4-2 record and will face UNLV Saturday, September 8 at 2:30 p.m. and Gonzaga at 5:00 p.m.
