Boone, N.C. - T. Alford set a new school record in the men's 55m dash and provisionally qualifies for NCAA Indoor championships with a time of 6.23 at the ASU Indoor Opener Saturday in Boone. For NCAA purposes, .02 seconds will be added to this time because of the altitude adjustment rule.
"This was an outstanding start for T., considering that he has only been with the Cats for about two weeks due to his participation on Western's football team," said head coach Danny Williamson. "With some more practice time under his belt and a few adjustments, he may be able to improve upon this performance."
Also doing well in the meet were Darius Bryson, who ran an all-time personal best in 55m dash with a time of 6.41, and Milton Bolton, who finished second in the 400m with a time of 50.26. He also anchored the men's 4 x 400m relay team to a second place finish with a split of 48.2 seconds. Joining Bolton on this team were senior Caleb Bailey and freshmen Charleton Grant and Dustin Cowan.
John Robertson turned in an outstanding performance in his college debut in the 800m with a second place finish and a time of 1:57.91. Justin Davis had a very solid day in the horizontal jumps as he posted a personal-best in the long jump at 23-5, good for second place, and 46-2 in the tripple jump, good for third place.
Kamata Potts had a great day with an all-time best performance in two different events. Her time of 7.04 in the 55m dash, and her leap of 19-2 in the long jump, gave her an excellent start to the season.
Cedea Bowden turn in a couragous performance in the 55m dash with a time of 7.16. This performance came after she had suffered a fall during a warm-up collision with another athlete and suffered a fractured wrist. Bowden, one of Western's women's top athletes and team leaders, did not participate in any further competition during the meet.
Tonya Edmonds won the 800m event with a time of 2:24.69. Edmonds ran an outstanding race from start to finish as she led from wire to wire. In the pole vault, the duo of sophomore Laura Tieszen and junior Dana Anglin finished first and second, respectively, both clearing the bar at 11-5.75. The 4 x 400m relay squad of Leslie Martin, Jennifer Spivey, Ashelyn Little and Benetta Boyd claimed a second place finish with a time of 3:58.56.
Western will take a break from practice and competition until after the Holidays.
