Charlotte, N.C. - Western Carolina senior Alissa Short has broken the school record in the women's 3000 meter steeple chase for the second consecutive week. On Saturday (Apr. 10) at the UNC Charlotte Invitational, Short finished second overall in the event with a time of 11:19.07, over 23 seconds faster than her finish last week when she broke the previous record of 12:03.04 by nearly 21 seconds.
Several Catamount men and women as well as WCU relay teams finished in the top 10 in their respective events, while several also came out with personal or season-best performances. Coming in second in the men's 400 was Milton Bolton with a season-best time of 47.27, while the women's 4x400 meter relay team of Leslie Martin, Jennifer Spivey, Tonya Edmonds and Asia Davis also finished with a season-best time of 3:46.67 to place second. The WCU men's 4x100 team of Mike Malone, Darius Bryson, Milton Bolton and T. Alford came in second with a team-best record of 41.04.
In the field events, Laura Tieszen came out on top in the women's pole vault with a mark of 12-3.5 and additionally had a personal-best throw in the javelin of 119-4, coming in fourth overall. Miranda Long threw a personal-best 140-7 in the women's hammer throw to place eighth and Ryan Fussell had a personal record in the men's javelin with a toss of 152-11, which put him in sixth.
Wes Willoughby won the men's pole vault for the second time this season with a vault of 14-5.25, tying his previous title mark, while David McCall gave a personal-best performance in the same event with a vault of 13-11.25 to place third. In the women's high jump, Brittany Whitaker came in third with a personal-best jump of 5-6.
On the track, Spivey finished fifth in the women's 400 with a personal-best time of 55.62 and Davis won the women's 400 meter hurdles with a personal record time of 1:01.75. Lawrence Briscoe came in seventh in the men's 400 meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 54.73. Leslie Martin won the women's 800 for the second straight week, this week with a time of 2:10.33.
The Catamounts are off until April 24 when they will head east for the Davidson Invitational before the Southern Conference Championships, which take place May 1-2 in Boone, N.C., on the campus of Appalachian State.
