The Western Carolina volleyball team overcame four match points in game four of its match at Chattanooga then cruised in game five for a come-from-behind victory over the Mocs, 30-28, 11-30, 19-30, 31-29, 15-8. The match was the Southern Conference opener for both teams Friday night at Maclellan Gym.
The win was the fourth straight for the Western while the Catamounts snapped a two-game Moc winning streak, including a UTC victory over North Carolina State.
Western Carolina, down two games to one and facing match point at 29-27 in the fourth, steadily came back not allowing Chattanooga to score another point and dropped the Lady Mocs to 2-9 overall and 0-1 in the SoCon. The Catamounts poured it on in the fifth and deciding game to go 4-5 overall and 1-0 in the conference.
Kellyn Thaut had 20 kills and 13 digs to lead the Catamounts with Stefanie Peters notching 15 kills and 12 digs. Western's Ellie Talbot tossed in 19 digs and Meghan Boyle tallied 13.
After losing a see-saw game one, UTC freshman Bethany Herndon served seven straight points to start game two giving Chattanooga the momentum for the next two games and most of the fourth. At match point, however, the Lady Mocs could not put it away.
With Western's struggles in games two and three, WCU head coach Angell Benson shuffled the lineup and sophomore Heather Koontz provided a big spark off the bench to spur the Cats to the win.
Kelsey Amundson led the Lady Mocs with 21 kills and 23 digs and Lindsey Galloway had 19 kills and 12 digs. Dominique Mayor chipped in 19 digs, Herndon had 15 and Kelly Ramsay fielded 12. Leslie Ball had 12 kills for a .391 percentage and Juliana Martinez had 10 kills.
Western Carolina will stay on the road to face East Tennessee State on Sunday (Sept. 25) at 2:00 pm.
