Final Stats
Cullowhee, N.C. -
Brenden Winters scored 20 points to lead Southern Conference South Division leading Davidson (10-7, 6-0 SoCon) to an 80-57 victory over homestanding Western Carolina (5-14, 0-6 SoCon) Wednesday night at the Ramsey Activity Center.
The Catamounts were without junior center David Berghoefer, their leading scorer (13.6 ppg) and rebounder (7.2 rpg), who suffered from back spasms prior to the contest.
Winters made the first basket of the game and Davidson never trailed the remainder of the contest. Western Carolina kept the game close through the first 10 minutes. However, Winters had back-to-back layups on the left baseline to push Davidson's lead to 13 (24-11) 9:03 left before the break. After Western's Rans Brempong made consecutive free throws to make the score 32-18, that would be as close as WCU would get and the Wildcats went on a 10-2 run to make it a 22-point game. Davidson would take a 46-23 lead at intermission.
The second half, Winters made Davidson's first eight points to give his team a 28-point cushion (54-26) and put the game out of reach.
Ian Johnsonn and Jason Morton came off the Wildcat bench to score 15 and 11 points, respectively, while Logan Kosmalski added 10 points. Kosmalski also pulled down nine rebounds as Davidson out-rebounded Western, 39-30. Jason Richards contributed six assists with just one turnover.
Brempong tried to pick up the slack left by Berghoefer's absence. Brempong scored 17 points, his most since scoring 28 at UNC Asheville in early December, and pulled down nine rebounds, while blocking four shots. Trey Hopkins came off the bench to add 13 points for the Cats, adding four steals. Jared Outing had nine rebounds, including seven on the offensive end, with seven points.
Western Carolina will continue its three-game home stand, returning to action Saturday (Jan. 22) versus Wofford. Tip-off is set for 7:00 pm and will follow Western's women's game versus Georgia Southern, which starts at 4:00 pm. Also, on Saturday, the women's basketball team will celebrate 40 years of basketball in the modern era. For more information, please contact the Department of Athletics at (828) 227-7338.
