Five Catamounts reached double-figure kills and three tallied double-doubles as Western Carolina downed The Citadel, 3-1 (31-29, 30-14, 28-30, 30-17) Sunday afternoon in Southern Conference volleyball action at the McAlister Field House in Charleston, S.C.
The win, which was the second in the past three matches for the Cats, evened Western's record in SoCon at 3-3, and moved WCU to 4-13 on the season. The Citadel dropped to 2-15 overall, winless in league play (0-7).
Led by junior Heather Koontz' team-high 15 kills, the Catamounts took an early 2-games-to-none lead before dropping a nip-and-tuck game three, 30-28. Yet, WCU rebounded to dominate game four, limiting the Bulldogs to six kills on 38 attacks with seven overall errors, winning the game and match, 30-17.
Joining Koontz in double-figures was classmate Krista Neumann with 14 kills on a stellar .414 attack percentage (14k, 2e, 29ta), the best individual attack percentage by a Catamount this season. Neumann also added 11 digs and four block assists. Senior Ellie Talbot hammered home a dozen in the win while also digging a match-high 18. Sophomore duo Meredith Harmon and Danielle Spitzer combined for 20 kills (10 apiece) and were a large reason the Cats out-blocked the `Dogs, 11-8, which tied a season-high for the Cats. Spitzer recorded two solo blocks and four assists, while Harmon was credited with one solo stop and three assists.
Rounding out the double-double performances for first-year head coach Stephanie Dragan's team was junior setter Meghan Boyle, who dished out 53 assists and dug 10 in the win. Her libero classmate, Kate Willard, added 13 digs on the afternoon.
For the Bulldogs, senior middle blocker Marina Daniel led The Citadel with 18 kills and four total blocks and freshman setter Emily Hill added 45 set assists. Another senior, outside hitter Stefanie Farris also added 15 kills for the cadets, while freshman outside hitter Rachel sanders added 10.
