The Western Carolina Track & Field teams performed well at a pair of non-team scored events held this past weekend. The Catamounts traveled to the Sea Ray Relays and the Solid Orange Classic hosted by Clemson University.
At the Univ. of Tennessee's Sea Ray Relays, the Catamounts recorded seven seasonal bests, including a pair of school records on the women's side. Sophomore Asia Davis blistered the course in the women's 400-meter hurdles with a time of 59.28 to set the school mark. She had previously qualified for the NCAA East Regionals with her then-school record, but again turned in a time below the qualifying mark. Davis finished fourth among the tough field in Knoxville.
The women's 4x400-meter relay team passed the baton in record timeboth qualify for regionals and establish the new WCU record, just missing the NCAA Regional Qualifying mark by a second. The team, consisting of Leslie Martin, Raquel Ramseur, Davis, and Jennifer Spivey, finished 13th overall. Individually, Ramseur placed 19th in the 400-meter dash, crossing the stripe in 55.89.
For Western's men, junior Adam Puett qualified for the NCAA Regionals with a time of 3:48.14 in the 1,500-meter run. Puett's time was fourth on the field, just two and a half seconds off the first place finisher.
Darius Bryson turned in his best time in the 100-meter dash, breaking the 11-second barrier with a 10.92 mark. Defending Southern Conference Athlete of the Week, freshman Zeb Johnson, placed 11th in the 400 with seasonal best 47.52.
While part of the squad was competing over the mountain in Tennessee, the remainder of the Catamounts headed south for the Solid Orange Classic at Clemson.
Rachel Glasgow led the way for the women, posting a second-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:06.12. Teammate Michaela Hall finished ninth in the same event. Also recording a second-place finish was senior Laura Tieszen, who soared over 3.80 meters in the pole vault. She added a third place finish in the javelin thrown with a season-best distance of 34.27 meters.
In other field events, Sharhonda Bell hurled the shot put a seasonal best 12.20 meters to finish seventh. Cherokee, N.C., native Miranda Long also placed seventh in the discus throw with a mark of 38.03. Jenn Hawkins placed eighth in the hammer throw, just missing a season-best for the team with her mark of 44.26 meters.
For the men, Western took second and third in the 110-meter hurdles as Lawrence Briscoe and Matt Harlfinger ran times of 14.69 and 15.49. Ashton Bennett finished sixth and Bobby Robinson eighth in the same event. Chris Lynch finished sixth in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:06.85
In field events, Justin Spormann and David Bowles gave Western its only two first-place finishes for the men. Spormann leaped 12.86 meters in the triple jump while Bowles heaved the javelin 57.60 meters to win their respective events.
Robinson also placed third in the high jump, leaping over 1.87-meters, his best of the outdoor season. He was followed by Briscoe in fourth. Wes Willoughby, who like Tieszen and Briscoe pulled double-duty on the weekend, vaulted over 4.60 meters both at the Sea Ray and Solid Orange meets for his best of the season. Willoughby placed second at Clemson.
Thrower Jason Stepp led the way in the weight events, placing third in the hammer throw and second in the shot put. He was followed by Jerod Kelly and Chris Lewis in third and fourth in the shot, while Lewis finished fourth in the hammer with Matt Decker placing fourth.
The Catamounts will travel to the Davidson Invitational this weekend in the final tune-up before hosting the 2005 Southern Conference Track & Field Championships in Cullowhee April 30-May 1.
