Cullowhee, N.C. -
Western Carolina's lone representatives at the Davidson Invitational placed first and second in the men's javelin throw over the weekend. Freshman David Bowles and junior Josh Lee were the class of the field in the final tune-up meet before the 2005 Southern Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships this weekend in Cullowhee.
Bowles claimed his second consecutive first-place finish, hurling the javelin 57.53 meters (188-09 feet) on Saturday. That performance comes on the heels of his Southern Conference and team-leading 59.54-meter showing to place first at the Solid Orange Classic last weekend at Clemson.
Lee, who claimed first in the event at the first-annual Catamount Classic on April 2, was just over five meters behind his freshman counterpart to place second. He edged out conference rivals Tim McGuire and Adam Williams of Appalachian State by one and a half meters to earn the runner-up position. Lee currently ranks third in the SoCon in the javelin throw.
Western Carolina University will play host to the 2005 Southern Conference Men's and Women's Track & Field Championships this weekend, Saturday April 30 and Sunday, May 1 at the new Soccer/Tennis/Track complex in Cullowhee. Events kick off bright and early Saturday morning with the start of the Decathlon events at 8:15 am. For more information, please visit SoCon Information or www.soconsports.com.
