CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina volleyball (3-7) won the final match of the VB Rags Western Carolina Invitational defeating Howard (1-11) 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-22) Saturday in the Ramsey Center.
Junior Paloma Alvarez had a career-high 10 kills in the win with 24 attacks on just five errors and a .208 attack percentage. Teammate Amanda Kerr also recorded double figure kills with 10 as well and had just four errors on 22 attacks.
In the first set, Western Carolina had what appeared to be a comfortable lead, 22-14, but Howard 6-1 run to pull to 24-20. The Catamounts closed out the first game on a kill by Kara Lynzee Brooks.
Set two was even closer then the previous game. The game was tied at 22 attack errors by Howard gave Western Carolina a 24-22 advantage. Kerr got a kill off an assist by setter Katie Hennessey to assist the Catamounts in taking set two.
It was almost a carbon copy of set two in set three. Again the two teams found themselves knotted at 22. A kill by Carrie Minogue, a Howard attack error and a kill by Alvarez close out the game and the match.
Western Carolina heads back on the road next weekend to participate in the Coastal Carolina Invitational. The Catamounts face UNC Wilmington at 4 p.m. Friday to start the tournament.
