Statesboro, Ga. - The Western Carolina women's tennis fell, 7-0, to Georgia Southern in their Southern Conference opener on Saturday morning.
The Catamounts (1-2, 0-1 SoCon) couldn't overcome the early deficit as the squad lost first lost the doubles point. WCU would then drop the six singles matches as the Eagles (5-4, 1-0 SoCon) won their conference-opening match, while snapping a two match losing skid.
Freshman Karen Jiménez Sarmiento played strong against GSU's Jessica Fuller, but fell, 1-6, 5-7, in the fifth spot. Sophomore Ainhoa Iglesias Díaz also took four sets against Ashley Hungerford, but lost, 1-6, 3-6, in the four slot.
Carolina Lainez made solid comeback in set two of her match with Ali Beavers, but Georgia Southern held on with a 6-1,6-4, win. Senior Amanda Massey dropped her point to Melanie Rolle, 0-6, 3-6.
Emily Turke (1-6, 0-6) and Izabella Glinska (0-6, 2-6) each dropped their singles matches in Saturday's contest.
In doubles play, Jiménez Sarmiento and Lainez lost their match, 3-8, to Georgia Southern's Beavers and Natalie Maffet. Massey and Díaz also lost the second slot in doubles to Hungerford/Rolle, 3-8.
The Eagles' Kristi Kegerreis and Christine Caforio defeated the combo of Turke and Glinska, 2-8, in the doubles three-hole.
Western Carolina returns to action on Sunday with a 10:00 a.m. match at the College of Charleston. Live stats will be available online through CofCSports.com.
