BOONE, N.C. - In a showdown between the North Division's second place ASU and third place Western Carolina, Appalachian State would defeat the Catamounts in three sets, 16-25, 16-25, 21-25. Appalachian State improved to 13-7 (5-1 SoCon) outhitting the Catamounts .348 to .212. WCU dropped to 8-14 (3-3 SoCon).

Appalachian State was led offensively by Kelly Rhein and Anna Wagner who led the Mountaineers in kills with 11. Defensively, sister libero Courtney Rhein led the way for ASU with 20 digs.

In the first set, Appalachian State streaked to an 11-5 advantage over the Catamounts behind the serve of senior Maggie Seeds. Two Carrie Minogue kills would cut the Mountaineer lead to 12-8. Later in the set, a 5-0 Mountaineer run would give Appalachian a 16-9 lead. ASU would take the set, 25-16. Brittany Lysik finished the first set with a productive 10 assists and six digs. Minogue also picked up two block assists, tying her for eighth on the all-time total blocks list. WCU's sluggish first set hitting continued Wednesday night, hitting just .150 compared to Appalachian's .325. Appalachian State would take the second set by the same score, 25-16.

WCU would tie the match at seven after a powerful Rebecca Stoltz cross court kill. As has been the case throughout the season, the Purple and Gold were able to find its offense in the third set. After ASU took a five point, 14-9 lead, Western Carolina would tie its rival on a long rally, capped by a Minogue kill. A receiving error by Appalachian State would give WCU its first late-match lead at 17-16.

Appalachian would retake the lead, 19-17, with a 3-0 run before head coach Karen Glover would take a timeout. Western would answer after the timeout with a kill by senior Abbey Scroggins. Western would tie the match at 20 with an equalizer off of a Mountaineer attack error. A powerful kill by App's Anna Wagner would give the Mountaineers a 21-20 lead. WCU would pick up one last point to get within a 23-21 ASU lead, but the Mountaineers would finish the match off with a Wagner kill, taking the set and the match with a 25-21 win.

Senior setter Brittany Lysik picked up her ninth double-double of 2011, a team high, logging 25 assists and 12 digs. Libero Morgan Cochran reached 15 digs. It is the eleventh time the sophomore has tallied a match with double-digit digs. Freshman Jordan Timmermann also added nine kills and seven digs.

The Catamounts return from their five-match road trip to host Wofford on Fri. night, followed by Furman on Sunday. This weekend will be Parent's Weekend, with the volleyball team hosting a team cookout on Sunday prior to the match in the Creek Lot across the street from the Ramsey Center truck tunnel. Streaming and Gametracker will be available for this weekend's matches at the Ramsey Center starting at 11 a.m.
