The Catamounts (2-8) concluded play in the Active Ankle Challenge at Purdue University with a 3-0 (25-11, 25-17, 25-16) loss to No. 13 Purdue and a 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-14) loss to Jacksonville State Saturday.
Senior Carrie Minogue made her second all-tournament team of the season receiving the honor for her play over the weekend. Minogue led the team in kills throughout the tournament with 20.
Purdue (8-0) quickly took the first set from the Catamounts, 25-16.
The second set between the Boilermakers and the Catamounts was a very competitive one, as the set saw five lead changes between the two schools. After being knotted at 13, Purdue would finish the set with a 25-16 advantage.
The third set was much like the second with the Catamounts coming out of the gates quickly, before running out of steam after being with four of Purdue. Purdue won the third 25-14.
In the second match against Jacksonville State, the Gamecocks quickly jumped out to a 1-0 lead, taking the first set by a score of 25-16.
After JSU got on the board first with a service ace in the second set, consecutive blocks by seniors Carrie Minogue and Rebecca Stoltz gave the Catamounts their first lead of the match. The Gamecocks would answer with a 7-0 streak highlighted by three points by JSU's Lauren Busing and two kills by Liza Senenkova. WCU would claw back to tie the match up at 11 before Jacksonville State pulled away with another streak. The Gamecocks would win the second set 25-18, before going on to take the match with a 25-14 third set victory.
Freshman Paige McConlogue made her first two collegiate start Saturday at the libero position. The Albemarle-native finished with 16 digs between the two matches. Stoltz led the way in kills with six.
The Catamounts will host mountain-rival UNC Asheville Tuesday night at the Ramsey Center in WCU's home-opener. The match will begin at 7 p.m. Live stats will be available for Tuesday's match on CatamountSports.com.
