Spartanburg, S.C. - The Western Carolina women's tennis team closed out the fall portion of its 2014-15 season at the Terrier Intercollegiate, hosted by Wofford College. The Catamounts had to deal with inclement weather throughout the weekend and many of the draws were not completed due to that factor.

"I'm very proud of the way we competed this weekend," said head coach Michaela Kissell-Eddins. "We came away with some very good wins and the matches we lost all were extremely competitive. I'm especially happy with the progress we have made in doubles from the first tournament until now. We are going to continue to work hard in preparation for the spring and we look forward to the many opportunities our regular season will hold."

Senior Megan McLinden and freshman Montse Mesalles combined to advance to the doubles final of the Gray Draw. They opened up the tournament with an 8-6 victory over a duo from Lenoir-Rhyne before downing a pair from Georgia Southern University, 8-4. The finals pitted the Catamounts against Amalie Davidsen and Caroline Sherrer of UNC Asheville. The Bulldogs took the match 8-4 ending McLinden's and Mesalles' run.

Junior Shannon Bettiol and freshman Elizabeth Ansari also went 2-1 in a doubles action. The pair won the opening match 8-1 in the Black Draw against a team from USC Upstate. In the next round they fell 8-6 in a hard fought match to a duo from Gardner-Webb. Their final doubles match of the weekend came in the third place match and they won a marathon 8-7(4) match against Julie Gauguery and Sabina Jeresic of Arkansas State.

Juniors Nicole Nielly and Erin Maguire teamed up to win their opening match in the White Draw. The pair downed a duo from host Wofford 8-5 before falling to a team from Presbyterian College. In the third place match, the pair fell to a team from Gardner-Webb, 8-1.

Four individuals picked up solo victories including Mesalles, Ansari, Nielly and Bettiol. Mesalles won her opening match 6-7, 7-5, 10-6 against a competitor from Virginia Tech before falling to an Arkansas State student-athlete in the semifinals of the Terrier Draw. The third place match was not able to be completed due to inclement weather.

Ansari fell in her opening match to Hunter Hall of UNC Asheville in which both sets had to go to a tiebreaker, 7-6(3), 7-6(3). In the first round of the consolation bracket of the Gray Draw, she defeated Dominique Bruce of Lenoir-Rhyne, 6-3, 6-1. The consolations finals were never completed due to the weather stoppage.

Nielly, like Mesalles, won her opening match 6-3, 6-3 over Sarah Rieckman of Gardner-Webb. She then fell to Nona Ruppert of USC Upstate in the semifinals 6-2, 7-6(3) in the Wofford Draw. The third place match like the others was cut short due to inclement weather.

Bettiol also won her opening match in the Black Draw 6-2, 6-3 over Brittany Nuttall of Presbyterian. In the semifinals she fell to Mary Phillips smith of Georgia Southern 7-5, 4-6, 10-5 in a highly competitive match. She missed her chance at third place due to the weather stoppage.
