BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -
For the second-straight year the Western Carolina University men's and women's track & field teams swept the Southern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships. The championships is the third-straight for the women and second-straight for the men. On the women's side senior Xaviera Bass was named co-Most Outstanding Female Athlete with Furman's Allie Buchalski. Bass was also named co-Most Outstanding Field Performer with teammate senior Alisha Bradshaw. On the men's side junior Jared Johnson earned his second-straight Most Outstanding Field Performer while freshman Brenden Caldwell was named Freshman of the Year. Head coach Danny Williamson won Coach of the Year awards for both the men's and the women's teams.
The men won the championship by 73 points over second-place Samford, 228-155, while the women won by 71 points also over Samford, 226-155.
The men crowned five individual champions on Saturday in addition to winning the 4x400m relay. The women took home five individual titles on Saturday as well and they also won the 4x400m relay.
The men's best event came in the 60m as the Catamounts swept the first through fifth spots. Junior Jermaine Lewis won with a season best time of 6.83. Caldwell came in second at 6.93 while fellow freshman Chris Hancock came in third at 6.98. Senior Jerry Wickerson took fourth (7.04) and senior Demari Boswell claimed fifth (7.07).
The women also fared well in the 60m as five student-athlete earned points for the Catamounts. Junior Tayla Carter picked up the individual title with a time of 7.49. Sophomores Kayla Williams (7.78), Tiffani Lewis (7.83) and Chenell Bryan (7.87) finished fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively, as Bass came in eighth.
Five Catamounts picked up points for the men in the 200m as well. Hancock posted a season best time of 21.91 to win the championship. Wickerson came in second at 22.08. Freshmen Dakota Lamont (22.32) and Henry Kiedy (22.38) placed fourth and fifth, respectively, as Boswell came in eighth at 30.27.
Carter led a group of four Catamounts in the 200m on the women's side. She won the event with a time of 24.46. Senior Genevieve Emrick (25.62) and K. Williams (25.79) came in fifth and sixth, respectively, while junior Corina Archie-McMillan placed eighth in 26.36.
Senior Aaron Tribble and Lamont finished first and second, respectively in the 400m. Tribble won with a time of 48.66 as Lamont crossed the line in 48.96. Freshman Kaleb McEntyre came in seventh at 53.97 as Boswell crossed in seventh at 1:00.28.
Emrick won the title on the women's side for the 400m. She posted a time of 55.44. Archie-McMillan came in third after crossing the line in 57.08. Senior Lena Elliott posted a sixth place finish with a time of 58.32 and junior Michaela Williams came in seventh at 59.12.
Junior David Johnson won the triple jump with leap of 14.80m (48-06.75). Freshman Kevin Hires placed third after stopping the tape at 13.98m (45-10.50). Fellow freshman Jordan Santana came in fourth with a distance of 13.64m (44-09.00) and junior Christian Carswell placed seventh at 13.11m (43-00.25).
Senior Devyn Ressler led a group of four Catamounts in the pole vault. She captured the SoCon title with a season best vault of 3.90m (12-09.50). Junior Korie Bennett cleared 3.50m (11-05.75) which earned her fourth. Senior Cara June Elyea and freshman Meghan Breden each cleared 3.35m (10-11.75) but Elyea earned sixth due to fewer attempts. Breden took seventh.
Junior Jared Johnson posted a season best toss of 18.64m (61-02.00) in the weight throw to take home the crown. Sophomore Scott Peretin came in sixth with a distance of 15.35m (50-04.50).
The final women's individual title winner was senior Alisha Bradshaw who won the weight throw with a season best throw of 17.80m (58-04.75). Sophomore Hailey Cook placed fifth with a distance of 15.48m (50-09.50) and sophomore Alisha Blackmon came in eighth after stopping the tape at 14.71m (48-03.25).
The men's final individual champion was senior Marquis Bailey who posted a season best time in the 60m hurdles to claim the championship. Bailey and fellow senior Abraham Faison finished first and second, respectively. Bailey crossed the line in 8.14 while Faison stopped the clock at 8.22.
The women's 4x400m relay team consisting of Archie-McMillan, Emrick, senior Michaela Birek and Carter took the victory with a time of 3:46.42. Tribble, Lamont, junior Dante Ortado and Kiedy teamed up to win the men's 4x400m relay with a time of 3:17.07.
Bass led a group of four Catamounts in the 60m hurdles. Bass came in second with a time of 8.50. K. Williams took fourth at 8.76 as freshman Alyiah Riley came in fifth after stopping the clock at 8.90. Birek picked up an eighth place finish with a time of 9.13.
Carswell closed out competition in the heptathlon with a second place showing as he picked up 4,755 points. Junior Dustin Triplett came in sixth with 4,357 points and Santana came in eighth at 4,277 points.
Lewis, Bryan and Bass came in fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively, in the women's triple jump. Lewis made a jump of 11.04m (36-02.75). Bryan was right on her heels at 11.03m (36-02.25) and Bass stopped the tape at 10.94m (35-10.75). Senior Molly Fagan came in eighth with a distance of 10.65m (34-11.25).
Junior Jamie Bigby picked up four points in the men's 800m as he finished fifth with a time of 1:57.95. Junior Michael Cornwell picked up a point as he finished eighth in 2:01.05. Cornwell also picked up two points in the one mile run as he finished seventh with a time of 4:14.33.
The final women's scorer was Elliott who picked up a point in the women's 800m with an eighth place finish in 2:38.46.
