The Western Carolina men's and women's track & field teams took early leads Friday afternoon at the 2015 Beynon Sports Surfaces Catamount Classic Track & Field Invitational and steadily built their leads throughout the evening. After four events, the men lead by 29 points while the women hold a 45-point lead. Winthrop sits in second in both the men's and women's standings.
The Catamounts picked up four event wins on the day with two coming from the women's side and two from the men.
Junior Molly Fagan, sophomore Anisia Starege and senior Xaviera Bass swept the podium in the women's high jump. Fagan led the way as she cleared 1.68m (5-06.00) which ties a WCU season best. Starege and Bass each posted 1.65m (5-05.00) jumps but Starege earned the second place finish due to fewer number of attempts.
Junior David Johnson, sophomore Jerry Bryant and freshman Kevin Hires swept the top three spots in the men's triple jump. Johnson won the event by over a foot as he stopped the tape at 14.81m (48-07.25). Bryant took second at 14.38m (47-02.25) while Hires came in third with a leap of 14.35m (47-01.00).
Sophomore Chenell Bryan notched a season best leap of 11.51m (37-09.25) in the women's triple jump on her final attempt of the competition. The distance earned her the victory and a valuable 10 points for the Catamounts. Sophomore Tiffani Lewis took third at 11.11m (36-05.50) while freshman Erin West came in fourth with a distance of 10.93m (35-10.50).
Junior Christian Carswell led a group of four Catamounts who scored in the men's high jump. Carswell took the crown with a winning jump of 1.97m (6-05.50) while Bryant picked up a fourth place finish after clearing 1.88m (6-02.00). Senior Aaron Tribble came in fifth at 1.85m (6-00.75) while freshman Joe Templeton placed seventh with a leap of 1.80m (5-10.75).
Senior Anne Greer came in second in the women's javelin with a toss of 39.24m (128-09). Fellow senior Kim Cannon came in fourth at 36.65m (120-03) while junior Holly Gaines placed sixth with a throw of 32.20m (105-08).
Redshirt junior Adam Parker picked up a second place finish in the men's javelin as he stopped the tape at a season best mark of 56.27m (184-07). Sophomore Dustin Triplett came in seventh at 45.42m (149-00).
Senior Alisha Bradshaw posted a season best in the women's hammer throw as she finished third with a distance of 52.00m (170-07). Sophomore Hailey Cook finished sixth at 46.56m (152-09) while junior Jasmin Brown came in seventh at 45.78m (150-02).
In the final event of the evening, junior Jared Johnson posted a third place finish in the men's hammer throw. He stopped the tape at 48.06m (157-08). Freshman Mateius Brown came in sixth (46.09m (151-02)) while sophomore Scott Peretin placed seventh (46.07m (151-02)).
The Catamounts will return to action tomorrow (April 11) as they close out the 2015 Beynon Sports Surfaces Catamount Classic.
