CULLOWHEE, N.C. -
The Western Carolina women's tennis team's match with Southern Conference foe UNCG was halted Friday afternoon after rain entered the Cullowhee area. The Catamounts trailed 3-2 in the match at the time of the suspension and the match will not be completed.
UNCG earned the first point of the match as Corinne Blythe downed freshman Elizabeth Ansari at No. 4 6-2, 6-1. Junior Shannon Bettiol evened the match at one as she downed Stephanie Falcon in the No. 2 match 6-0, 6-1.
The Spartans took the lead for good as Jamie Grinberg took down junior Erin Maguire 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5. Their third and final point of the day came at No. 6 as Blaine Boaz won a marathon match against freshman Montse Mesalles. Mesalles took the first set 6-2 before falling 6-4 in the second set despite leading 4-1 midway through the stanza. The third set would go Boaz's way at 6-3.
Junior Nicole Nielly earned a hard fought win at No. 3 to cut WCU's deficit to just one as she downed Amy Ellis. Nielly won the first set in speedy fashion 6-1. She then dropped the second set 6-3. The third set was a back-and-forth affair by Nielly found the answer and downed Ellis 7-5 to claim the victory.
The lone singles match still in action at the time of the rain was at No. 1. Senior Megan McLinden took a 7-5 victory in the first set after trailing 5-4 in the period. She won three straight games including a pair on her serve to clinch the opening stanza. The second set was back-and-fourth as well by Kayla Gammie hung on to win 6-4. McLinden was trailing 4-2 in the third set when the rain made the courts unplayable and halted the match.
The Catamounts will try to close out their regular season with a victory tomorrow morning as they host King at 10:30 am.
