Women Win SoCon Championship; Men Finish Second

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Western Carolina track & field teams wrapped up competition at the 2015 Southern Conference Outdoor Championships with the Catamount women claiming their first title since 2013 while the men finished second. The women won nine of the 15 events on the final day of competition to claim an 89 point victory over second place Samford. The Bulldogs earned the men's championship by just 41 points over the Catamounts as WCU's men won five of the 15 events on Sunday.

Junior Tayla Carter was named co-Most Outstanding Athlete on the women's side while senior Alisha Bradshaw earned Most Outstanding Field Performer. Carter won both the 100m and 200m events while also being a part of both the 4x100m and 4x400 relay championship teams. Bradshaw won the discus, finished second in the hammer and placed third in the shot put. Head coach Danny Williamson was once again named the Women's Coach of the Year. It is the third time this year that Williamson has earned the Coach of the Year honor. He won both the men's and women's Coach of the Year awards during the indoor season.

Junior Holly Gaines became WCU's first individual champion of the 2015 Southern Conference Outdoor Championships as she took top honors in the women's heptathlon. She tallied 4,584 points over the seven events to set a new season best. She won the high jump, 200m and javelin events. Senior Anne Greer earned all-conference honors by finishing second with 4,287 points. Greer won the long jump and finished second in the shot put and javelin. Sophomore Latasha Pride (3,281 pts.) and freshman Erin West (2,801 pts.) picked up valuable points for the Catamounts as well as they finished fifth and sixth, receptively. As a group the Catamounts earned 25 points in the heptathlon towards the team score.

Junior Christian Carswell took third in the men's decathlon with a season best 6,272 points. He took first in the 100m and long jump while placing second in high jump and pole vault.

The men and women swept the 4x100m titles. Senior Xaviera Bass, Carter, senior Genevieve Emrick and sophomore Kayla Williams combined on the women's side to post a time of 45.96 to top the field by over a second. Sophomore Jermaine Lewis, senior Aaron Tribble, senior Demari Boswell and freshman Brenden Caldwell teamed up on the men's side to cross the line in season best fashion, 40.62.

The women picked up 22 more points in the high jump as sophomore Anisia Starege and senior Xaviera Bass took the top two spots and junior Molly Fagan placed fifth. Starege captured the title with a season best height of 1.70m (5-07.00) while Bass came in second at 1.67m (5-05.75). Fagan cleared 1.57m (5-01.75) to take fifth.

The Catamount women continued to extend its lead with 21 points in the 400m. Emrick took the individual title with a time of 54.42. Junior Corina Archie-McMillan placed second just over a second behind Emrick at 55.77. Sophomore Alexis Robinson rounded out the scorers with a sixth place showing at 58.89.

Freshman Henry Kiedy led a quartet of Catamounts in the men's 400m as he won the individual title with a season best time of 47.04. Freshman Dakota Lamont took third at 48.47 while Boswell took fifth in 48.54. The final Catamount scorer was sophomore Max Burke who placed seventh with a time of 48.91. The four scored 22 points for WCU and cut the deficit with Samford to 31 points.

Sophomore Chenell Bryan earned a second place finish in the women's triple jump with a season best distance of 11.57m (37-11.50). Freshman Erin West picked up a point for the Catamounts as she finished eighth after stopping the tape at 11.00m (36-01.25).

Bradshaw took home the women's discus championship with a meet record toss of 44.62m (146-05). The toss broke Appalachian State's Ayokka Greene's 1998 record of 43.36m. Sophomore Hailey Cook placed fifth with a distance of 41.52m (136-03).

Carter was the nest WCU champion as she took home the 100m title with a season best time of 11.52. K. Williams came in fourth after crossing the line in 12.09 while sophomore Tiffani Lewis (12.20) and Bryan (12.22) came in sixth and seventh, respectively.

Caldwell, J. Lewis and Tribble all placed in the top five of the men's 100m to cut Samford's lead to just 15 points. Caldwell took home the individual title with a season best time of 10.50. J. Lewis came in fourth at 10.72 while Tribble finished fifth with a time of 10.74.

Bass, K. Williams and freshman Alyiah Riley all picked up points in the women's 100m hurdles. Bass finished third with a school record time of 13.58. The time knocked out Nicole Okolo's record of 13.66 set back in 2011. K. Williams took fourth after crossing the line in 13.92 while Riley placed seventh in 14.36.

The men took a 116-112 lead over Samford following the 110m hurdles. Seniors Abraham Faison and Marquis Bailey swept the top two spots in the event. Faison and Bailey both posted a season best time of 14.28 but Faison edged Bailey in a photo finish. Junior Justin D'Angelo came across eighth at 15.76.

Samford retook the lead by a slim margin of 129-128 after the men's shot put. Junior Jared Johnson came in third with a distance of 14.99m (49-02.25). Sophomore Scott Peretin came in just behind at fourth with a mark of 14.94m (49-00.25). The final WCU scorer was sophomore Evan Albertson who picked up one point in eighth at 14.24m (46-08.75).

The women continued to lead by a large margin following the 800m. Senior Lena Elliott finished eighth after crossing the line in 2:15.46.

Samford began to pull away from the Catamounts on the men's side following the 800m. The Bulldogs scored 23 points in the event while WCU was able to manage two points after junior Jamie Bigby finished seventh with a time of 1:53.98.

WCU picked up 17 points in the women's 400m hurdles to take a 57 points lead. Senior Michaela Birek led the Catamounts with a season best time of 58.72 while finishing second. Gaines placed third at 1:02.70 while a pair of Catamounts rounded out the top eight. Pride crossed the line in 1:04.51 to finish seventh while Greer came in eighth at 1:04.86.

The men scored 13 points in the 400m hurdles but still trailed by 20 points. Faison came in second with a season best time of 52.44. Bailey (54.07) and D'Angelo (55.03) came in sixth and seventh, respectively.

Samford used a one, two, three finish in the men's discus to extend their lead as Johnson attempted to keep the Bulldogs within reach. Johnson finished fifth in the event with a distance of 45.14m (148-01) while Peretin placed eighth with a toss of 43.61m (143-01).

The women earned 20 more points in the shot put as Cook won the individual title with a toss of 14.88m (48-10.00). Bradshaw came in third at 14.07m (46-02.00) while freshman Alisha Blackmon posted a sixth place finish at 12.54m (41-01.75). The final WCU scorer was junior Jasmin Brown who came in eighth with a distance of 11.71m (38-05.00).

The men picked up eight more points in the high jump as Carswell finished second after clearing 1.98m (6-06.00).

In the final field event of the day, the triple jump, WCU's men earned 17 points as junior David Johnson came in second with a leap of 14.60m (47-11.00). Sophomore Jerry Bryant finished just behind in third with a distance of 14.33m (47-00.25). WCU's final scorer was freshman Kevin Hires who came in sixth at 13.74m (45-01.00).

The women continued to roll in the 200m as Carter won her third event of the championship with a time of 23.69. Emrick took second after crossing the line in 24.35 while Archie-McMillan placed sixth at 25.26.

The men scored 19 points in the 200m. The Catamounts swept the third through sixth finishers while also taking eighth. Kiedy led the way in third at 21.63 while junior Dante Ortado came in fourth with a time of 21.71. The next two WCU finishers were Boswell (21.72) and senior Jerry Wickerson (21.86). The final WCU runner to cross the line was Lamont who posted a time of 22.01.

The men and women swept the final events, the 4x400m relays. The women won by nearly five seconds as Archie-McMillan, Emrick, Birek and Carter teamed up to post a time of 3:41.83. The men won by just over four seconds as Tribble, Lamont, Boswell and Kiedy posted a time of 3:12.75.
