For the second time this season senior Xaviera Bass of the Western Carolina track & field team broke the WCU 100m hurdles program record. Bass stopped the clock in the preliminary race at 13.54 to surpass her previous record of 13.58 which she set at this season's Southern Conference Outdoor Championships.
Bass and her teammates were competing at the Aggie Last Chance meet hosted by North Carolina A&T trying to improve their marks for the upcoming NCAA East Preliminary Round. The NCAA East Preliminary Round will be held in Jacksonville, Fla., May 28-30. In order to qualify, a student-athlete must rank among the top-48 declared competitors in the event out of all the schools in the East Region.
Sophomore Anisia Starege and Bass also improved their marks in the high jump. Starege has been steadily increasing her height throughout the season and set a new season best Sunday by clearing 1.75m (5-08.75) and placing third overall. Bass also set a personal season best with a height of 1.70m (5-07.00) while finishing fifth.
Bass and Starege were the only Catamounts who were able to improve on their marks on Sunday but several others posted strong finishes despite not posting season bests.
Senior Alisha Bradshaw and sophomore Hailey Cook picked up top-five finishes. Bradshaw took second in the women's discus with a toss of 46.95m (154-00) while placing fourth in the shot put at 13.97m (45-10.00). Cook came in third in the shot put with a mark of 14.82m (48-07.50) while finishing seventh in the discus at 41.75m (137-00).
Senior Genevieve Emrick took third in the women's 400m with a time of 54.26 while also competing as part of WCU's 4x400m relay team. Emrick along with junior Corina Archie-McMillan, senior Michaela Birek and junior Tayla Carter won the event with a time of 3:43.17.
Junior Michael Cornwell earned a third place finish in the men's 3,000m steeplechase as he crossed the line in 10:15.05.
Birek was WCU's final women's top-five finisher as she placed fifth in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:00.39.
Freshman Dakota Lamont posted a time of 47.90 in the men's 400m to finish fifth while senior Abraham Faison finished fifth in the men's 400m hurdles in 52.54.
The Catamounts will now await the announcement of the declared athletes for the 2015 NCAA East Preliminary Round. The event will take place May 28-30 in Jacksonville, Fla.
