BOONE, N.C. -
Sophomore Anisia Starege of the Western Carolina women's track & field team was the lone Catamount competing at the 2015 Appalachian State Invitational on Saturday as she tried to improve her mark in the high jump. Starege bested the nine-competitor field and improved her mark by three-quarters of an inch.
Over the next few weeks the Catamounts will be attempting to get as many competitors qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary Round in Jacksonville, Fla., which will take place May 28-30. In order to qualify, a student-athlete must rank among the top-48 declared competitors in the event out of all the schools in the East Region.
Starege won Saturday's event after clearing a season best height of 1.72m (5-07.75). With the mark she now ranks 48th in the East Region in the high jump and if competition ended today she would qualify for the NCAA East Preliminary Round.
Currently on the women's side junior Tayla Carter ranks 23rd in the 100m and 27th in the 200m. Senior Michaela Birek is 26th in the 400m hurdles and senior Xaviera Bass is 37th in the 100m hurdles. Senior Genevieve Emrick is currently 59th in the 400m but is just two-tenths of a second away from being in the top-48.
