BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Western Carolina women’s tennis team gained its first win of the season in a neutral site match against Radford Sunday. The Catamounts won 4-3 after winning the doubles point and splitting the singles 3-3.

The win improves the Catamounts to 1-1 for the season and drops the Highlanders to 0-2

”I am really proud of how we competed this weekend and couldn’t be happier to come away with a 4-3 win today,” said head coach Michaela Kissell-Eddins. “I think the way we fought against Virginia Tech definitely carried over to today’s match and prepared us for a close test.”

Seniors Stacia Kissell and Shannon Bettiol started off doubles winning 6-1 over Natalie Sayer and Meili Martin in the No. 1 spot.

Senior Megan McLinden and freshman Savannah Taranto at the No. 2 slot followed up with a 6-1 defeat of Tarrannum Handa and Claire Nguyen locking up the doubles point. Sophomore Montse Mesalles and freshman Gaby Hurt needed a tiebreak in the No. 3 spot to defeat Taylor Fay and Grace Sarver 7-6 (7-1).

”The girls did a great job of setting the tone in doubles by coming out with a lot of energy and enthusiasm from the first point,” stated Kissell-Eddins.

Taranto picked up her first victory of her Catamount career winning 6-0, 6-0 over Nguyen for the first singles point in the No. 5 spot.

In the No. 2 slot Radford picked up their first win as McLinden dropped her match 6-0, 6-2 to Sayer.

Maguire improved to 2-0 on the season in the No. 6 spot defeating Sarver 6-2, 6-1, which allowed Kissell to clinch the match for the Catamounts in the No. 1 slot defeating Handa 6-3,6-1.

Martin gets Radford back on the board with her defeat of Bettiol at the No. 3 singles slot 6-4, 6-1, while Fay closed out the scoring for the Highlanders by defeating Ansari 6-4, 6-3 in the No. 4 spot.

”We’re excited to have two weeks of good practice before our next match and I know the girls can’t wait to compete again,” said Kissell-Eddins.

The Catamounts are back in action on January 30 in Durham, N.C. against North Carolina Central.
