WCU vs. King Results

CULLOWHEE, N.C. - The Western Carolina women's tennis team moved to 4-0 at home in 2017 with a pair of victories on Saturday. The Catamounts defeated N.C. Central 5-2 before downing King 7-0 in a nearly flawless match. Sophomore Alexa Webb led the way as she was a perfect 2-0 in singles action and 1-0 on the doubles court.

"Today was a good showing by the team as a whole," said head coach Micaela Kissell-Eddins. "For Savannah (Taranto) and Alexa (Webb) to pull out the win at number one doubles to secure the point was big for us and got us started on the right foot. NCCU is a solid team and on the single's courts we won, we really took control of the matches early and never let up at all. That trend continued over to our match with King as I thought everyone looked sharp and aggressive early. I was really proud of the way we stayed focused and eager for the duration of the doubleheader and played to win each game at every position."

WCU moved to 6-2 in spring matches this season.

Webb picked up wins at No. 3 against NCCU and No. 2 versus King. Against The Eagles she won 6-0, 603 and then won 6-1, 6-1 against the Tornadoes.

Freshman Lauren McCall also went 2-0 with wins at No. 4 against NCCU and No. 3 against King. In the victory over NCCU she won her match 6-1, 6-1 while she downed her King opponent 6-1, 6-0. Freshman Madison Riley continued her strong singles play as she was also 2-0 on Saturday. Riley won against the Central at No. 5, 6-1, 6-2 and at No. 4 against King, 6-2, 6-1.

WCU allowed King to just one set in which they won two games. All the rest of the sets were either 6-1 or 6-0.

NCCU's two victories came at No. 1 singles and No. 2 singles. The Eagles were forced to forfeit No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles due to an injury on the squad and the Catamount took advantage winning the doubles point to take an early 2-0 lead. WCU would go on to win three of the remaining five singles matches to take a 5-2 victory.

The Catamounts will be back in action Saturday, March 4 as they open up conference play at Mercer with a noon match.
