Senior Mateius Brown of the Western Carolina track & field program etched his name into the WCU record book Saturday afternoon as he toppled the program record for the shot put. The Catamounts closed out competition at the 2018 Buccaneer Track & Field Invitational Saturday as Brown was one of five Catamounts to capture individual event titles. Graduate transfer Ty-Leah Hampton continued her strong season as she was named the Most Outstanding Female Track Athlete at the meet.
Brown took down former Catamount Derek Summerour’s 22-year old record shot put record with a winning toss of 16.70m (54-09.50). Summerour’s previous program best mark of 16.33m was set in 1996 at the Clemson Tiger Classic. Junior Dakota Wright took third in the event as he topped 16m as well with a mark of 16.07m (52-08.75).
Hampton won the women’s 200m while taking second in the 60m. The graduate student outpaced the field in the 200m with a time of 24.52 while finishing just four one-thousandths of a second behind first place in the 60m after stopping the clock at 7.597.
Hampton was also a member of the women’s 4x400m team that won as well. Hampton along with sophomore Kellsie Whitehead, senior Sally Woerner and junior Dasha Arnaut turned in a time of 3:50.65.
The men also won the 4x400m relay as senior Henry Kiedi, sophomore Devaniel Dale, senior Keion Crossen and senior Dakota Lamont took the top spot with a time of 3:14.26.
Senior Kevin Hires and sophomore Di'Joun Huitt finished one-two in the men’s triple jump. Hires topped the field with a leap of 14.82m (48-07.50) while Huitt finished just under three inches back in second with a mark of 14.75m (48-04.75).
Junior Kaitlyn Lingard won the women’s 800m after stopping the clock at 2:13.66. Classmate Christina Nikolaou finished four spots back in fifth after crossing the line in 2:17.89.
The final Catamount individual champion was Arnaut who won the women’s 400m. Arnaut was one of three Catamounts in the top-five. She circled the track in 57.36 to finish ahead of the field while Whitehead finished in third at 58.12. Woerner rounded out the top-five in fifth with a time of 59.14.
Junior Caleb Albrecht took third in the men’s 800m after stopping the clock at 1:56.24.
Lamont and Kiedi finished third and fourth, respectively, in the men’s 400m. Lamont edged Kiedi with a time of 48.74 while Kiedi clocked in at 49.15.
Junior Simone Williams and senior Alisha Blackmon took third and fourth, respectively, in the women’s shot put. Williams measured in at 13.19m (43-03.25) while Blackmon tossed the shot 12.76m (41-10.50).
Sophomore Jada Woods placed fourth in the women’s triple jump after leaping 11.76m (38-07.00).
Crossen was the final top-five finisher as he took fifth in the men’s 60m. He raced down the track in 6.91.
The Catamounts will return to action next Saturday at the Thundering Herd Invitational.
