ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. - For just the second time this season, the Western Carolina women's tennis earned an impressive 7-0 victory as the Catamounts downed Hampton at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Fla., Tuesday afternoon. The match is the second for WCU on its annual spring break trip to Florida. Sophomores Lauren McCall and Jordan Strickland picked up their team-leading seventh individual wins of the season to lead the way.

"Overall, I think this is one of the best matches of the year for us when you look down the line at doubles and singles," said Associate Head Coach Jacob Eddins. "To win all nine matches on the courts today was not easy, but our girls were determined to get it done. The girls did a great job getting off to a quick start in doubles and just continued to get better throughout the day. We did a much better job today playing our games during the big points and the crucial moments to close out sets. I think this match will really help us building confidence moving into the middle of season and we look forward to closing out this trip Friday against Niagara. The girls just love it this time of the year."

Junior Savannah Taranto and Strickland jumped started the sweep with a 6-2 victory at No. 1 doubles. Freshmen Carli Deehr and Caitlin Ward then clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win at No. 3. Freshman Jordyn King and McCall closed out the doubles action with a 6-3 win of their own at No. 2.

Strickland was the first Catamount to secure a singles win as she downed her opponent 6-4, 6-1 to improve to 7-1 on the season. Taranto then gave WCU a 3-0 advantage with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 4.

Junior Alexa Webb clinched the match at No. 5 as she won 6-3, 6-2 to even her season record to 4-4 in singles play.

Ward was next to complete her match as she secured her first collegiate singles victory in just her second action of the season. The rookie from Auckland, New Zealand nearly swept her opponent with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6.

King pushed the lead to 6-0 with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 1, her fifth win of the season. The toughest win of the day came at No. 3 as McCall edged her opponent 2-6, 6-3, 10-7 over three sets to improve to 7-1 on the year.

WCU will close out its trip to Florida with a match against Niagara Thursday, March 8. The match time will be announced on CatamountSports.com after it is determined by both coaching staffs.
