Catamounts Open 2020 Season with Loss at Belmont

Sophomore Jacy Smith earns win at No. 2 singles

NASHVILLE, TENN. – Western Carolina women's tennis opened the 2020 season with a 6-1 loss to Belmont Saturday at the Ensworth Tennis Center. 
The Catamounts were competing without two of its players and had to forfeit a No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles. 
 
TURNING POINT:
Belmont won the doubles point by winning No. 1 and the Catamount default at No. 2. The Bruins went on to win four of five singles matches played and got the victory at No. 6 singles thanks to the default. 
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Sophomore Jacy Smith helped Western Carolina avoid a Bruins sweep by defeating Belmont's Peyton Lee 6-4, 6-7, 10-6 at No. 2 singles.
  • Belmont earned victories at No. 1, 3, 4 and 5 singles. 
  • Smith's match was the only one to go to a tie-breaker. 
 
NOTES:
  • With the victory on Saturday, Smith is on a two-match winning streak in duel play dating back to the 2019 season. She has won eight of her last duel singles matches in her career.
