Savannah, Ga. – Third after the opening 18 holes, the Western Carolina men's golf team slipped nine spots into a tie for 12th-place in the team standings despite being just six strokes higher in the second round at The Invitational at Savannah Harbor, hosted by William & Mary.
The Catamounts are just eight strokes outside the top five and just four shy of the top 10 entering Sunday's final round at the par-72, 6,918-yard course at The Club at Savannah Harbor. Paired with golfers from Bethune-Cookman, Iona, and the United States Naval Academy, WCU's scoring five opens between the 11th and 14th holes in Sunday's 8:00 am shotgun start.
Sophomore
Tumi Kúld leads the Catamounts after two rounds, climbing 22 spots in the second round to sit in the clubhouse in a five-way tie for 11th at 3-over par 147. The Akureyri, Iceland, product knocked three strokes off his second 18 holes in carding an even-par score in the afternoon round, charting a trio of birdies to counter three bogeys.
Freshman
Pierre Viallaneix advanced 17 spots in round number two to give the Catamounts a second golfer inside the top 20 individually. A product of Apopka, Fla., carded six birdies on Saturday, backing-up his 3-over par round of 75 with a 1-over round of 73 for a total of 148. Sophomore
Louis Theys led WCU in the opening round with a 1-over par 73, tied for 13th in the individual standings before slipping into a tie for 35th overall after a 5-over 77 in round two.
Rounding out WCU's scoring five over the first two rounds are freshman
Magnus Pedersen in a tie for 77th overall with a score of 156 (74-82) and classmate
Quinton Metz in a tie for 90th at 159 (78-81). Pedersen matched his classmate Villaneix with a team-best six birdies on Saturday, four coming in the first round.
Second after the first round, Delaware sits tied with Valparaiso which climbed nine spots in standings to atop the team leaderboard after 36 holes with matching scores of 584. Valpo carded a tourney-low team round of 283 in the second round to vault up the standings. Francis Marion (587) sits in third place followed by Wright State (589) and Florida A&M (592) to round out the top five.
Austin Schoonmaker of Wright State leads the 99-golfer field by a stroke over second-place Hugo Kedzlie of Delaware after shooting 5-under par 139 (69-70).
