Tennis Adds Four to 2020-21 Roster

Transfers from Akron and Louisiana-Lafayette and pair of freshmen

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina head tennis coach Bret Beaver today announced new additions to the 2020-21 roster for the upcoming season. The newcomers include transfers from Akron and Louisiana-Lafayette along with freshmen from Texas and Hungary.

NOTES: Had a national high school ranking of 153 … Honored as Rookie of the Year as a freshman and earned third place in district play … She was a regional qualifier as a sophomore and state qualifier as a junior … Her senior campaign was cut short due to the CoVID-19 pandemic. 

Beaver comments – "Antonella is an incoming freshman from Texas. She has national tournament experience. Antonella had a very decorated high school career and has success against top players in Texas."

NOTES: Arrive at Western Carolina as a transfer from the University of Akron for her senior season … Spent three seasons with Akron … As a junior, she participated in the ITA Midwest Regional Championships where she won three consecutive matches in the qualifying rounds including an upset of No. 7 ranked Marie Mayerona of Eastern Michigan, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, in the Round of 16 to advance to the Main Draw … In her sophomore season, she was named to the 2019 second-team All-MAC, Academic All-MAC, and 2019 MAC All-Tournament Team … She finished her sophomore spring season 19-5 playing the No. 2-3 sports … As a freshman went 13-7 in the spring, playing the 3-5 positions … She went 6-2 in MAC play, including a six-match winning streak … Was the sole winner against defending MAC champion and undefeated Buffalo with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Lolade Ogungbesan at No. 3 … Overall, she went 47-25 in singles for Akron and 35-29 in doubles.
