Catamounts Drop Nail-Biter to USC Upstate in OT

Catamounts begin two-game road swing Saturday

The Basics
 Score: USC Upstate 58, Western Carolina 51, OT
 Records: Western Carolina 4-4, USC Upstate 4-2
 Location: Ingles Court at the Ramsey Center, Cullowhee, N.C.  
 
CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina women's basketball dropped a nail-biter in overtime to USC Upstate 58-51 Wednesday on Ingles Court in the Ramsey Center.  
 
Turning Point:
USC Upstate outscored Western Carolina 11-4 in overtime. The Catamounts led by one, 47-46, with 45 seconds left  in regulation but USC Upstate's Terah Harness hit 1-of-2 free throws, with four seconds remaining to force overtime. 
 
 Individual Leaders
  • Redshirt junior Nadia Marshall led the Catamounts with 15 points. 
  • Junior Andrea Martin Ruiz added 11 points and also had three assists. 
  • Joi Reid just missed a double-double ripping down 13 rebounds and scored eight points. 
  • The Spartan' Chellia Watson and Rachael Rose led all scorers with 17 points each. 
 
 Inside the Box Score
  • Western Carolina built its largest lead of the game, nine points, with 6:05 left in the third quarter. USC Upstate went on an 11-2 run to tie the game at 30 with 2:04 left in the quarter. It was the first of nine ties in the second half. 
  • The game was tied a total of 13 and the lead changed 13 times as well. 
  • The Catamounts had 20 turnovers which turned into 19 points for USC Upstate. 
  • Western Carolina was 1-of-13 from the three-point line while USC Upstate connected on five. The Spartans were 0-of-8 from behind the three-point arch hitting all five of their threes in the second half. Western Carolina's Zanoria Cruz hit the only three-pointer of the first half connecting on one with 6:05 left in the second. 
  • The Catamounts nearly doubled up the Spartans in the rebounding department pulling down 41 to USC Upstate's 26. The Spartans had just three offensive boards.
  • Western Carolina was 15-of-19 from the free-throw line as Marshall was 3-for-3. 
  • Each team hit 19 field goals, but the difference was five of them were three-pointers for USC Upstate.  
 
 News & Notes
  • Western Carolina dropped its second overtime game of the season – both at home. Earlier in the season, WCU lost an overtime contest to UNC Asheville 74-72. 
  • Marshall has scored in double figures in the last three games – all three games she scored 15 points. 
  • Sophomore Joi Reid ripped down a career-high 13 rebounds which were also the most by a Catamount this season. She becomes the third Catamount of the year to record double-digit rebounds.
  • USC Upstate was the fourth team from the Big South Conference the Catamounts have faced this season. The Catamounts will face its final two teams from the Big South this weekend traveling to Winthrop and Campbell. Currently, WCU is 2-2 against Big South teams. 
  • Western Carolina has outrebounded opponents in seven of its eight games on the year. 
  • The Catamounts are averaging 39.4 rebounds per game and holding opponents to 28 per contest. 
  • Andrea Martin Ruiz's 11 points were a season-high for the junior.
  •  The Catamounts have had two or more players score in double figures in a game in five of the eight games on the year.
