Viallaneix Cards Final Round 69 to Rally at Furman Intercollegiate

Sophomore paced WCU in 38th-place tie; WCU finishes tied for 13th

Greenville, S.C. – Western Carolina sophomore Pierre Viallaneix carded a 2-under par 69 in Sunday's final round at the 51st annual Furman Intercollegiate, rallying 33 spots in the final finishing order to lead the Catamounts in a tie for 38th-place overall at the par-71, 6,984-yard Furman University Golf Course. WCU finished in a two-way tie for 13th in the team standings with a three-day score of 893.
 
Opening on the par-3 14th on Sunday, Viallaneix opened a string of five-straight pars to begin his final round. After making the turn to the front nine, the Apopka, Fla., native charted three-straight birdies to move to 3-under par with 10 holes to play. Following his only bogey of the day on the par-4 fifth, Viallaneix capped his tournament with eight-consecutive pars to shoot 69. All told, Viallaneix carded 14 pars over the final 18 holes in coming home with the 2-under round and a three-day total of 221.
 
Sophomore Magnus Pedersen finished tied for 46th with a score of 222, shooting 2-over par 73 in Sunday's final round. He was followed by freshman Presten Richardson in a tie for 57th at 224, matching his second-round 75 over the final 18 holes. Rounding out WCU's scoring five were juniors Louis Theys in a tie for 76th at 228 and Tumi Kúld in a tie for 93rd at 235.
 
Viallaneix and Pedersen led WCU with 35 pars apiece with Viallaneix leading the Catamounts with seven birdies. Pederson and Richardson both carded eagles.
 
Playing unattached as an individual, sophomore Quinton Metz climbed three spots on Sunday to finish tied for 97th overall with a score of 239.
 
Tournament host Furman edged hard-charging Florida Gulf Coast and fellow Southern Conference foe Chattanooga to claim the team championship. The Paladins finished with a three-round score of 853, two strokes ahead of FGCU (855) and third-place UTC (857). In second after two rounds, Wofford slid to fourth at 860, shooting 292 over the final 18 holes, with Charleston Southern rounding out the top five with a score of 869.
 
Furman's Keller Harper claimed individual medalist honors by three strokes over FGCU's Jon Hopkins, 207-to-210.
 
Western Carolina returns to action April 12-13 with the 54-hole Wofford Invitational at the Country Club of Spartanburg.
