LEXINGTON, Va. – Western Carolina junior
Jalen Elwell set a new school record in the men's 1,000-meter run while the Catamounts earned a pair of wins in women's field events to highlight Friday's action at the VMI Winter Classic held inside the Corps Physical Training Center (CPTC).
Elwell completed the race with a school-record time of 2:32.21, narrowly topping the previous record of 2:32.84 held by James Montague. He earned a third-place finish for his efforts. Placing fifth in the event was
Elijah Stuart with a personal-best time of 2:34.49 followed by
John Davis in ninth with a personal-best time of 2:38.39.
Tyler Rodriguez finished sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 13.78 meters (45'2.5").
Owen Barr was eighth thanks to his personal best mark of 13.49 (44'3.25").
Kaleb Ambrose punched his ticket for the men's 60-meter hurdle finals with a time of 8.53 in the prelims.
Victoria Solheim was the winner of the women's weight throw with a top throw of 17.05 meters (55'11.25").
Makaila McIntyre won the women's triple jump with a mark of 12.30 meters (40'4.25"). McIntyre's distance was .01 meters shy of tying her personal best of 12.31 meters. She also qualified for the women's 60-meter dash finials. McIntyre recorded the top time in the semifinals with a season-best time of 7.62 after recording a time of 7.68 in the prelims. She had the fastest time in each of those two rounds.
Carter Unger was seventh in the women's pole vault after she cleared a height of 3.20 meters (10'6").
Jennifer Wagner and
Sydney Gallant were part of a four-way tie for 10
th as they both cleared a bar set at 3.05 meters (10').
Sara Klemm finished in eighth place in the women's 1,000-meter run with her personal-best time of 3:12.24.
Madelynn Duffield was 10
th, completing the race in 3:15.90.
Derica Currie was 10
th in the women's triple jump with a distance of 10.94 meters (35'10.75").
Dami Shodeinde qualified for the women's 60-meter hurdle finals after recording a time of 9.24 in the prelims.
The meet continues Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. with the men's mile.
