Catamounts' Comeback Against Furman Falls Short

 Location: Ingles Court in the Ramsey Center, Cullowhee, N.C.  
 
CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina women's basketball dropped a heartbreaker to Furman 63-58, after overcoming a 16-point deficit in the third quarter, Thursday on Ingles Court in the Ramsey Center. 
 
Turning Point:
Furman outscored Western Carolina 26-15 in the third quarter and survived a fourth-quarter Catamount surge to come away with the win. 
 
 Individual Leaders
  • Sophomore Joi Reid led all Catamounts with 12 points including dishing out six assists and ripping down four rebounds. 
  • Nadia Marshall posted 11 points and added five rebounds. 
  • Sophomore Zanoria Cruz was the third Catamount to score in double figures with 10 points. 
  • Furman had two players score 20 points led by Tate Walters 22 points and Tierra Hodges' 20. Hodges also posted a double-double with 10 rebounds. 
 
 Inside the Box Score
  • The Catamounts trailed by just seven at the break, 27-22.
  • Western Carolina was only down two, 27-25, after a Marshall field goal, with 8:42 left in the third. Furman went on to an 18-4 run to build its 16-point lead over WCU with 4:28 left in the third.
  • The Catamounts made the game interesting in the fourth quarter outscoring the Paladins 21-10. 
  • With Furman leading by 10, 61-51, with 2:07 remaining, Western Carolina went on an 8-0 run to cut the Paladin's lead to three, 61-58 with seven seconds remaining. 
  • WCU was forced to foul, and Walters iced the game on two free throws. 
  • Western Carolina shot 50 percent from the field and held Furman to 35.6 percent. 
  • Furman's seven three-pointers kept the Paladins ahead in the game. WCU hit three treys including two by Madison Pack
  • The Paladins made the most out of their trips to the free-throw line going 14-of-18. WCU was 7-for-10. 
  • Furman ripped down 37 rebounds to Western Carolina's 28. 
  • Western Carolina had 16 turnovers in the game which Furman turned into 17 points. 
  • Western Carolina scored 34 of its 58 points inside the paint. 
 
 News & Notes
  • Reid scored a career-high 12 points and also hit a career-best five field goals. 
  • After going two games without a player in double figures, Western Carolina had three players in double figures against Furman. 
  • Marshall and Cruz each scored in double figures for the ninth time this season. 
  • Tembre Moates has 831 points in her career and moved into 26th place in the WCU record books for points in a career. 
  • Moates had two rebounds against Furman and now has 516 moving into a tie for 26th place with former Catamount Emily Clarke (2007-11).
  • Western Carolina's 58 points are the most scored by the Catamounts since the Catamounts scored 58 points against Mercer on Jan. 15.
  • Moates got her second-consecutive start against Furman.
