Catamounts Drop Heartbreaker to UNCA

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina women's tennis dropped an absolute heartbreaker 4-3 to visiting UNC Asheville Thursday at the Catamount Tennis Complex.
 
TURNING POINT:
With the match tied 3-3, the Bulldogs picked up the win at No. five singles to clinch the match.
 
 INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • The Bulldogs took the early lead winning at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. The third doubles match was halted after UNCA clinched the doubles point.
  • UNCA would grab a 2-0 lead when Western Carolina had to withdraw from No. 2 singles due to injury.
  • From there, Western Carolina battled until the end of the match.
  • Senior Jordyn King gave WCU its first point of the match when she came back from being down 1-4 in the first set to sweeping 6-4, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.
  • Angela Perez helped WCU tie the match with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles.
  • The Catamounts took a 3-2 lead with Antonella Benavides' 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles.
  • UNC Asheville tied the match, 3-3, when Lize Alet Morkel came back from being down 6-2 at No. 1 singles to Catamount Kata Foldeak to winning the next two sets, 6-4, 7-5.
  • The thrilling match culminated at No. 5 singles. Hoda Habib lost the first set in a tiebreaker 7-6 (2-0) after coming back to tie it 6-6. She lost the second set 6-4.
 
 NOTES:
  • Perez played the first singles match of her Catamount career, and earned the win, after sitting out most of the spring due to injury.
  • King played at No. 3 singles for the first time the season and earned the win.
  • Benavides is 4-1 at No. 4 singles on the year.
 
 
UPCOMING:
Western Carolina dips back into Southern Conference play Sunday traveling to Chattanooga. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m.
