Courtney Gunter has added four incoming freshmen to her squad's roster for the upcoming 2022-23 season.
Madison Logan (Brasstown, N.C. / Hayesville HS),
Brie Mapanao (Quakers Hill, NSW, Australia / St. Mark's Catholic College),
Sadler Miller (Clayton, N.C. / Corinth Holders HS), and
Brooke Sutton (Concord, N.C. / Cox Mill HS) join the Catamounts roster.
The four freshmen join a returning lineup of five including fifth-year senior
Madison Isaacson (Greensboro, N.C.), senior
Victoria Ladd (Greensboro, N.C.), junior
Kayleigh Baker (St. Augustine, Fla.), and sophomores
Elizabeth Lohbauer (Venice, Fla.) and
Kaitlyn Wingnean (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada).
Madison Logan comes to Cullowhee from nearby Hayesville High where she played for head coach Bryan Hedden. A three-time 1A/2A West regional individual medalist, Logan qualified for the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) 1A/2A state championship all four years as a prep. This past season, Logan finished tied for first place at the Women's 1A/2A West Regional with a round of 2-over par 73 to earn her berth in the state championship event. She then finished as the NCHSAA 1A/2A state individual runner-up with a two-round score of 156 (75-81) at the Longleaf Golf & Family Club. Logan finished tied for sixth in the state 1A/2A tournament both as a sophomore and junior for the Yellow Jackets and was 11th as a freshman back in the fall of 2018.
Brielle Mapanao is from Quakers Hill, New South Wales, a suburb of Sydney, Australia, and is a member of The Australian Golf Club. Over the past year competing as an amateur, Mapanao has three Top 10 finishes including a third-place showing at the Concord Cup held in Oceania, Australia, shooting a three-round score of 224 (76-76-72). Mapanao went undefeated in the preliminary rounds of the NSW Division I Major Pennant competitions in both 2019 and 2020 and finished as the top female finisher in the Junior 6S Tour at Royal Sydney. She was additionally chosen by Golf NSW to join an eight-person, mixed-gender team in the Australian Interstate Teams match-play at Sorrento Golf Club in April 2022.
Mapanao's amateur resume also includes an individual championship at the Faldo Series Australia Championship in the Girls' Under-16 age group, rallying with a final-round 70 before winning in a playoff. She also scored wins as a youth at the NSW Junior Championships, Brett Ogle Junior Masters, and claimed the girls' division of the prestigious Harvey Norman Sydney Week of Golf in 2018.
Sadler Miller qualified for the North Carolina 4-A state girls' golf tournament each of her four years as a prep. She finished tied for ninth at the 4-A East regional as a senior to advance to state before posting rounds of 77 and 74 for a two-day, 36-hole score of 151 to finish tied for 13th overall at the event held in Pinehurst, N.C. Miller carded a round of 75 in her junior year at the state competition that was held in May 2021, finishing tied with six others in 11th place. She also carded a personal-best round of 70 to claim individual medalist honors at the Greater Neuse River 4-A Conference championship. Miller was a two-time All-State selection, earning third-team honors as a junior and capped her high school career with a second-team nod as a senior.
Back in 2019, she posted a trio of Top 10 finishes on the North Carolina Series tour in the Futures North Carolina division, twice finishing third at Anderson Creek and at the Pinewood Country Club. In April 2022, she posted an 11th-place tie in the Carolina's Classic at Carolina Trace. She was additionally the Women's Club Champion at the Eagle Ridge Golf Course back in 2020, adding individual club victories at Riverwood Golf Club in Clayton, N.C., and Hedingham Golf Club in Raleigh.
Miller was a three-sport standout at Corinth Holders High, qualifying for the state tournament in swimming and track in addition to her plaudits in golf.
Brooke Sutton was a part of the consecutive regional title teams at Cox Mill High School and was in the starting five in Cox Mill's first state title win in 2019. The Concord, N.C., native joins former prep teammate
Elizabeth Lohbauer. The Concord, N.C.., native had many first-place and podium finishes in the TYGA, NJGA, and Hurricane Junior Golf Tours. She also qualified in consecutive tournaments for the Nick Faldo Tour for HJGT, shooting 79 and 76 in the two-day tournament at the Country Club of Salisbury with a podium finish that advanced her in the tour series.
She continued in the NJGA tour, where she recently won and shot her lowest round of 72 at Westport Golf Club.
Gunter and Western Carolina women's golf will unveil its 2022-23 seasonal schedule in the coming weeks this summer ahead of competitions slated to begin in September.
