Catamounts Conclude First Half of League Slate with Pair of Home Matches

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina volleyball finishes out the first half of Southern Conference play beginning on Thursday with a matchup against Wofford before welcoming in UNCG the next night. Both match will be contested at Ingles Court at the Ramsey Center and are scheduled for 6 p.m. starts. The matches both will be shown on ESPN+ (paid subscription required) with live stats available online through CatamountSports.com. for both matchups.

Sophomore Ali Morris led three players in double-figure kills with 19 as Western Carolina volleyball claimed a four-set victory over the host Chattanooga on Saturday night at Maclellan Gym in Chattanooga. Morris led the attack with her seventh double-double tallying 19 kills along with 15 digs and added a pair of helpers in the win. Livi Weidmann finished with 15 kills and five digs as Bailey Hartsough added her sixth double-double with 14 kills and 18 digs. Hartsough also finished with five assists and three blocks. Sarah Janourova totaled a pair of career-highs 43 assists and 22 digs for her team-high eighth double-double of the campaign.
 
Wofford sits with a 14-3 record including a 5-1 mark in SoCon play after falling in four sets at The Citadel last Saturday. Sarah Barham leads the Terriers with 141 kills on the season as one of five players to sit with 100+ kills thus far in 2023. Sarah MacLean (127), Addison Foote (125), Mary Emily Morgan (124) & Millie Loehr (119) all have eclipse the 100 kill plateau in 2023. Barham sits atop the SoCon rankings in blocks in 2023 with 81 rejections as she's earned a pair of SoCon defensive player of the week honors. Abbey Richman leads Wofford in digs with 301 as she's also collected four defensive player of the week honors as the Terriers have won six of seven defensive player of the week awards in 2023. Wofford was selected third in the preseason poll under the directon of Lynze Roos who's in his ninth season at the helm for the Terriers led by Barham who earned preseason all-conference honors.

WCU holds a 28-21 edge on Wofford in the all-time series with the two teams defending home court in 2022 as the Catamounts won 3-1 in Cullowhee and the Terriers earned a 3-0 sweep in Spartanburg a season ago. Western Carolina has taken 19 of 24 meetings from Wofford in Cullowhee including five of the past seven matchups. In the 2022 home victory, now sophomore Ali Morris tallied a team-high 16 kills as Sarah Janourova finished with 23 assists in the four-set win over the Terriers. Eden Punch also tallied six blocks for the Catamounts in the contest.

UNCG sits with a 1-16 entering the weekend as they travel to Cullowhee on Friday before visiting Furman on Saturday afternoon. Aylin Baran leads the Spartans with 187 kills as one of three players to eclipse 100 kills on the season. Madeline Timmerman has 110 kills and is second on the team with 19 aces while Daija Jackson sits with 106 kills and a team-high 36 blocks thus far in 2023. Mallory Meers paces UNCG with 295 assists while Izora Gragg has 218 helpers for the Spartans.  UNCG was picked ninth in the preseason poll under the directon of Felicia Turner who's in her first season leading the Spartans..

The Catamounts hold a 33-27 edge over UNCG in the all-time series with WCU taking both meetings during the 2022 season in straight sets. WCU has defeated the Spartans in eight of the last 10 meetings all-time including a six-match win streak from 2018-2020. During the two victories during the 2022 season, Bailey Hartsough totaled 17 kills and 14 digs as Eden Punch finished with a team-high nine blocks and added 14 kills for WCU.

Following Friday's matchup at Chattanooga, the Catamounts open the second half of SoCon play beginning on Friday, Oct. 20 when WCU travels to Furman before squaring off at ETSU the next night. Both matches are set for 6 p.m. first serve as both games will be shown on ESPN+ (paid subscription required) and live stats will be provided by CatamountSports.Com for both matches.
