Catamount Volleyball Tripped by the Terriers

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina volleyball fell in straight sets on Thursday night to visiting Wofford at Ingles Court at the Ramsey Center. The Terriers took the match 25-22, 25-23, 25-18.

Ali Morris led the way offensive for the Catamounts with nine kills and both Bailey Hartsough and Livi Weidmann tallied eight in the contest. Sarah Janourova picked up her ninth double-double of the season on Thursday with 26 assists and 12 digs, adding three kills. Morris led the way for Western Carolina defensively with 13 digs as Hartsough and Janourova both finished with 12 apiece.
 
Sarah Barham led Wofford with 12 kills and Sarah MacLean had 10 kills for the guests. Emily Hodsdon tallied a team-high 18 assists as Taylor Pecht finished the match with 15 assists. Addison Foote paced the Terriers with 12 digs as she also had five kills and three blocks to tie Barham in the rejections category. 

Wofford (15-3, 6-1 SoCon) got out to the early 5-3 advantage in the opening set to grab the lead. The guests used a 6-2 spurt to extend the advantage to four, 10-6. The Catamounts would score nine of the next 13 points to take a 15-14 lead at the media break. Wofford came out fast after the stoppage with six of the next nine points to gain a 20-18 lead forcing a WCU timeout. After the Catamounts quickly evened it at 20, Wofford closed on a 5-2 run to take the opening set 25-22.

The Catamounts started quickly in the second set with three straight points before Wofford answered with a 7-2 run to take the early lead. WCU answered with a 6-2 burst that allowed the hosts to pull in front 11-9 in the middle stages of the second set. The Terriers were able to regain control after back-and-forth action using a 10-5 run to gain a 19-16 edge forcing a WCU timeout. The two teams traded multiple points as Wofford pushed the lead to 23-18 before a 5-1 Catamounts burst cut the deficit to one, 24-23. Wofford was able to claim the last point to take the set 25-23.   

Wofford opened the third set red-hot with an 8-4 run to gain the early lead that forced WCU to use its first timeout. The Catamounts battled back with six of the next nine points to cut the Terriers lead to one, 11-10 before a quick 4-0 burst allowed the lead to push back out to five. Western Carolina fought back with seven of the next eight points to take a 17-16 lead in the later stages of the third set. However, the Terriers were able to close the set off with a 9-1 run in the set to claim the match in three sets.

The Catamounts (5-13,2-5 SoCon) conclude the first half of SoCon play on Friday with a 6 p.m. first serve against UNCG.  The contest with the Spartans will be shown on ESPN+ (paid subscription required) and have live stats provided through CatamountSports.com.
