Morris Leads Offensive Attack in Four-Set Victory over Mocs

CHATTANOOGA, TENN. – Sophomore Ali Morris led three players in double-figure kills with 19 as Western Carolina volleyball claimed a four-set victory over the host Chattanooga on Saturday night at Maclellan Gym in Chattanooga. Western Carolina won by the scores of 25-19, 25-21, 20-25, 25-19.

Western Carolina improved to 5-12 on the season with a 2-4 league record as Chattanooga drops to 15-6 and 3-3 in SoCon matches.

Morris led the attack with her seventh double-double tallying 19 kills along with 15 digs and added a pair of helpers in the win. Livi Weidmann finished with 15 kills and five digs as Bailey Hartsough added her sixth double-double with 14 kills and 18 digs. Hartsough also finished with five assists and three blocks. Sarah Janourova totaled a pair of career-highs 43 assists and 22 digs for her team-high eighth double-double of the campaign. Eden Punch led the block with five rejections and also added six kills on 12 swings.

Gylian Finch paced the Mocs offensive attack with a double-double totaling 20 kills and 12 digs. Elaine Redman finished with 34 helpers and 10 digs for Chattanooga. Paige Gallentine led the Mocs on the defensive end with 21 digs as Finch and Morgan Romano had 12 digs for the hosts. Chard'e Vanzandt led the way with five blocks and added nine kills and four digs.

The Mocs started quickly in the opening set with an 8-4 burst out of the gates to force an early timeout from the Catamounts. WCU scored seven of the next 10 points out of the timeout to quickly even the score up at 11. The guests kept the pressure up with a 6-2 spurt to extend the lead to four, 17-13 and force a Chattanooga timeout. The hosts quickly cut into the deficit out of the timeout before a 8-4 burst from WCU pushed the Catamounts to a 25-19 set victory.

WCU opened quickly with the first three points of the set before an 8-2 burst from the Mocs gave the hosts an early lead in the second set. The Mocs pushed the lead to four, 12-8 before the Catamounts scored eight of the next 12 points evened the set at 16 apiece. The set remained tight before the Catamounts scored six of the final nine points to claim the set 25-21 and gain a 2-0 lead in the match.

The hosts pushed in front early in the third set with a 6-3 run out of the gates and after WCU cut it to two, 7-5 the hosts scored four of the next five points to take an 11-6 lead and force a Catamounts timeout. WCU cut the deficit to two, 13-11 on the heels of a 5-2 run before the Mocs scored five of the next six points to force a WCU timeout. Western Carolina continued to battle and fought back to a 21-16 deficit before the hosts claimed set three by the score of 25-20.

The Catamounts started fast in the fourth set with a 9-4 burst out of the gates before the Mocs fought back with a 8-5 run to cut the deficit to two at the midpoint of the set. WCU seized the momentum with eight straight points to stretch the lead the 10, 22-12. Chattanooga battled back with a 7-2 burst before Hartsough finished the match with a kill to lead WCU past the Mocs 25-19.

The Catamounts return home to Ingles Court at the Ramsey Center for a pair of matches beginning on Thursday Oct. 12 at 6 p.m. against Wofford before battling UNCG the next night at the same time. Both matches will be shown on ESPN+ (paid subscription required) as both matches will have live stats provided through CatamountSports.com.
