KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Western Carolina redshirt junior guards
Tre Jackson and
Vonterius Woolbright along with head coach Justin Gray were honored on Tuesday as the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) announced its All-District Teams. Jackson and Woolbright were second-team All-District 21 selections while Gray was tabbed as the Coach of the Year.
A second-team All-Southern Conference selection, Jackson led WCU during the regular season and ranked fourth in the league in scoring with a 15.9 point per game average that included a WCU Division I-era best 47 points in a 95-91 double-overtime win at Wofford on Feb. 8. His career-best, 47-point output remains the second-most scored by an individual in the NCAA this season and earned the transfer SoCon Player of the Week plaudits on Feb. 13. Including WCU's two SoCon Tournament games, Jackson finished in double figures 25 times and eclipsed the 20-point plateau in seven games.
Woolbright, a second-team All-Southern Conference choice and an all-tournament team honoree, finished among the Top 15 in four key statistical categories during the regular season including leading the conference in assists with 5.2 per game. The Albany, Ga., native tied his career-high of 30 points in the SoCon semifinal against Furman and first accomplished the feat in the double-overtime victory against Wofford. Woolbright recorded the fourth triple-double in the program's Division I history in the regular-season finale against VMI finishing with 14 points, 11 assists, and 10 rebounds.
In his second season in Cullowhee, Gray guided a Catamount team picked to finish in eighth place in both the coaches and media preseason polls to a fourth-place finish. Under his direction, WCU snapped a 13-game losing skid to regular season and tournament champion Furman with a 79-67 victory on New Year's Eve and secured a regular-season sweep against ETSU for the first time since the 1984-85 campaign. Additionally, the Catamounts took both games this season against Mercer for the first time since 2015-16, VMI for the first time since 2017-18, and Wofford for the second time in four seasons.
Western Carolina opens play in the 2023 Discount Tire College Basketball Invitational (CBI) on Saturday, March 18, at 5:30 p.m. against Conference USA foe, Charlotte. The game will be streamed on FloHoops (
