Track & Field Opens Outdoor Season at Weems Baskin Invitational

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The Western Carolina track & field teams open the outdoor portion of their season on Friday and Saturday, March 24-25, as the Catamounts compete at the Weems Baskin Invitational hosted by South Carolina at Cregger Track in Columbia, S.C.

In addition to Western Carolina and meet host South Carolina, Southern Conference foes The Citadel and Furman are scheduled to compete. The field also includes student-athletes from Augusta University, Benedict College, Charlotte, Claflin University, Coastal Carolina, College of Charleston, Coppin State, Davidson, Delaware State, High Point, Lander, Limestone, Marshall, Maryland Eastern Shore, Monroe College, Morgan State, North Carolina A&T, Newberry College, North Greenville, Radford, SCAD-Savannah, Savannah State, South Carolina State, South Carolina, Southern Wesleyan, Troy, UMBC, USC Aiken, USC Beaufort, Virginia State, Virginia Tech, and Virginia Union.
 
Competition begins Friday at Noon with the women's hammer throw, men's javelin, and the open section of the women's pole vault. Running events start at 4 p.m. with the men's and women's 400-meter dash preliminaries. A busy day of Saturday action starts at 10 a.m. with several field events along with the 1,500-meter run and is scheduled to wrap up around 4 p.m. with the 4x400-meter relay.
 
The Catamounts men's team finished in second place at the 2023 Southern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships with the women's team earning a third-place result. Riley Center was the winner in the men's shot put with Michael Harris winning the men's 400-meter dash. The Catamounts also took the men's and women's 4x400-meter relays. Dohnavon Hunt was named the Men's SoCon Freshman of the Year.
 
WCU is off next weekend before heading to the Duke Invitational on April 7-8.
